Introductions are when something new is first encountered.

It could be an introduction to a person (hi, nice to meet you, I'm LabGrrrl ) It could be an introduction to a paper or book (a small section usually saying "this book is about X") it could be the addition of something into a mixture or machine (the introduction of flour to the egg mixture causes the mix to stiffen) or anything used in that way.

I've never heard of an engineering specific use of the word introduction, but I do have an engineering guru in my contacts, so I'll star it for you.

I'm going to assume you meant "induction" and it would depend on the field you are talking about (mechanical, electrical, etc).
