tonalc1-To start with the only major attack on American soil has actually been British invasion during the War of 1812. I could argue that the Confederate invasions of the Union could be considered a foriegn invasion of the U.S. but not going to get into that. Hawiiaii was not part of the U.S. at the time but was a territory and the 9/11 attackers were not a nation but terrorist. Both could have been prevented in a perfect world and in the case of 9/11 using assets and methods that are being screamed about now as trampling rights; it is much easier to back track some one then it is to find them in the first place. They thing they have in common is that they provided an emotional reason for the majority of U.S. citizens to rally around.

The only two times that US soil has sustained a major attack. Both were with aircraft. Both resulted in the US entering into armed conflict. Both resulted in racist responses. Both could have been prevented.

Both led to major military escalation by the United States, and neither was as much of a surprise as many would have us believe.
