Illegal Immigrant Rescues Boy in Desert

PHOENIX — A 9-year-old boy looking for help after his mother crashed their van in the southern Arizona desert was rescued by a man entering the U.S. illegally, who stayed with him until help arrived the next day, an official said.

The 45-year-old woman, who eventually died while awaiting help, had been driving on a U.S. Forest Service road in a remote area just north of the Mexican border when she lost control of her van on a curve on Thanksgiving, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

The van vaulted into a canyon and landed 300 feet from the road, he said. The woman, from Rimrock, north of Phoenix, survived the impact but was pinned inside, Estrada said.

Her son, unhurt but disoriented, crawled out to get help and was found about two hours later by Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. Unable to pull the mother out, he comforted the boy while they waited for help.

The woman died a short time later.

"He stayed with him, told him that everything was going to be all right," Estrada said.

As temperatures dropped, he gave him a jacket, built a bonfire and stayed with him until about 8 a.m. Friday, when hunters passed by and called authorities, Estrada said. The boy was flown to University Medical Center in Tucson as a precaution but appeared unhurt.

"We suspect that they communicated somehow, but we don't know if he knows Spanish or if the gentleman knew English," Estrada said of the boy.

"For a 9-year-old it has to be completely traumatic, being out there alone with his mother dead," Estrada said. "Fortunately for the kid, (Cordova) was there. That was his angel."

Cordova was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents, who were the first to respond to the call for help. He had been trying to walk into the U.S. when he came across the boy.

The boy and his mother were in the area camping, Estrada said. The woman's husband, the boy's father, had died only two months ago. The names of the woman and her son were not being released until relatives were notified.

Cordova likely saved the boy, Estrada said, and his actions should remind people not to quickly characterize illegal immigrants as criminals.

"They do get demonized for a lot of reasons, and they do a lot of good. Obviously this is one example of what an individual can do," he said.

you're wrong, i have friends that have fought next to them and I know plenty of them over there. my hsuabnd was an illegal at one point and they asked him to join for papers, he is now a citizen and he chose not to join. but i know for a fact that there is illegals over there, maybe since u guys served so long ago that they have changed the laws but there are many many illegals over there fighting for this country and their papers

I really enjoyed this post!! I agree with Whiz, Yoda, and Geno. Some people will never admit they are wrong even when they are boxed into a corner and hit with a brick up both sides of the head!!! Next thing she will be saying is "well, I never came out and SAID illegal immigrants could legally enlist", i only said I know 5 people illegally in the military. Dang, overload of a**holes on here eh!! Don't let them get to you, you are correct. They do let immigrants into the war for papers in return. It's a little odd that you just so had 2 army recruiters answer your question out of the whole YA. Somethings a little fishy there. It's probably someone that has numerous accounts on here and is trying to prove the incorrect point. But anyone that has numerous accounts obviously has not life and takes the YA point system a little too serious. But anyways, to answer the question that was asked, which barely anyone seemed to respond to, no not all immigrants are bad. Many single minded people assume that they are. It takes all kinds to make the world up correct? We need more people like this gentleman and too bad border patrol has him, because they should let him in. He did risk getting caught to save someone else, when he could have chose to walk away and come into the USA. So good for you for posting this. Like I said don't let ignorant people get to you. The worst person in the world has done a number of very nice things. If doing 'a nice thing' was the only requirement for immigration, no one would come here because we'd be no better than anywhere else by now.

What sort of a person would leave a 9 year old alone in the desert with their mother's corpse?

I do think he shouldn't have been picked up THIS time, since this is behaviour we want to encourage (unlike running a red light, for example)

I never thought all illegal immigrants were monsters, only that they are too poor and too many for us to carry in our schools and services.

"Undocumented".....ILLEGAL ALIENS do NOT qualify to enlist in our military forces. You MUST be either an American citizen or LEGAL immigrant (read green card holder) to qualify. You will get no sympathy for illegal alien criminals by presenting misinformation.





In other words, we do NOT have illegal aliens "fighting for us in Iraq".

I was a U.S. Navy recruiter from 1994 to 1997. I retired in 2005 after 22 years, 4 months, and 4 days of service. I don't care if you "believe me" or not. The illegal immigrant babysat the child until authorities came to collect the both of them. He did not perform open heart surgrery or CPR on anyone. Capiche?? It's common knowledge that you are not supposed to move injured people...that might be what killed her..

Why don't YOU call the recruiting station they enlisted at, ask to speak to the recruiter in charge, ask to speak to the Zone Supervisor, call the district headquarters, or the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) that they processed at, give the names, report that they are illegal aliens and see what happens??? I GUARANTEE YOU if they are, they will be charged with fraudulent enlistment and ultimately discharged. If their recruiter knowingly participated in the fraudulent enlistment, he will be written up as well.

Of course, they are "friends" so you won't get them dishonorably discharged will you?

Yoda is correct. You cannot enlist in any of the 5 branches of military service unless you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien (i.e. green card holder)

Before you visit your local recruiter, be sure you meet the minimum qualifications for serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Some qualifications are required by all five services:
You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
You must be at least 17 years old (17-year old applicants require parental consent).
You must (with very few exceptions) have a high school diploma.
You must pass a physical medical exam

This information is readily available on any military site about recruiting. As was said, there is no gray area, there is no "bending of the rules", there are no "waivers". Period. You MUST meet citizenship requirements.

No...Not all are bad. And I hate it when people make it sound that way. But it is illegal to enter any country without proper documentation. I hope this man gets special consideration for a visa when they return him home. I'm sure the government could pull it off if they choose to.
