An MD has to prescribe them. It could be a regular doctor or it could be a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist will get a better psychiatric history to decide which medication might be best for you.

A general practitioner or family physician can prescribe such medications, but a psychiatrist would have more experience with them, if the first trials are not successful.
If you don't have a regular doctor, look into going to a clinic or mental health center [there are probably listings in your phone book].

You can begin with your regular doctor. He/she may prescribe them for you and they should suggest you see a therapist as well. These medications are not a cure but a tool. Once they are discontinued your symptoms will return. It is best to learn why you are feeling this way and how best to deal with it - which is where a therapist comes in.

anxiety is generally a component of depression.
but, why take meds as the first resort. there are no magic pills. how about taking care of your life first....
like:
#1 call a therapist and make and appointment
then:
what are you eating,
what daily exercise are you getting?
what twice daily relaxation techniques are you practicing for 20 minutes each session.

You can ask your primary physician, but if it is severe enough, he or she may suggest you see a psychiatrist for the medication.
