Hi Elliot,

A new dental filling is set once you leave the dentist. But eating on that side may cause Sensitivity that will pass. In the first few hours, stick to soft warm foods, nothing too cold and nothing too hot. Also avoid chewing on that side. As soon as you feel not so sensitive, you can resume eating regularly. By about 8 hours, you should be good to go back to normal diet.

Good Luck,
Nurse Angie, RN

If it is a bonded resin filling( a tooth colored composite), It is completely set when it is cured by the curing light(about 30 seconds, depending on the material and the light). Some other materials have a longer setting time. If the restoration is cemented, it's safer to wait 30-40 minutes to insure a complete setting of the dental cement. Whenever you have a tooth filled, ask your dentist what was used and how long you should wait to eat--often the limiting factor is the duration of the anesthetic. Good question!

ELLIOT, THIS IS GOOD QUESTION.
A SILVER FILLING IS SAFE TO EAT ON AFTER 1 HOUR AND FULLY HARDENED IN 24.
A COMPOSITE IS READY TO EAT ON IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU LEAVE THE DENTAL CHAIR. THE BLUE LIGHT OF THE DENTIST MAKES IT AS HARD AS IT WILL EVER BE.
