Evolution

As a scientist, i have many conflicting view points with the church and bible. however, i am a christian, although some would deem me a heretic, like my old church. As a biochemist though, and studying the complexitiy of the biological systems added with the complexity of the chemistry involved, i have found it very hard not to believe in some higher power.

How the world and such were made, the big bang theory works very well for me. but, for the big bang theory to work, there had to be something before the big bang. the explosion couldnt have come from nothing. there had to be something. again, a higher power.

as far as life, i think it is too complex to have started on its own. i think a higher power, in my religion, God, started the spark of life, maybe on Earth maybe not, but evolution then played a role. Evolution does not even mention the "start" of life, but how life changes over time to adapt to the enviroment. I have never had a problem in believing in both God and evolution. I think if you cant, your just being an extremist on either side and not looking at all the evidence presented.

The bible was written by man, therefore it is flawed. It has contradictions in itself. Man has left out books of the bible b/c they didnt like what those books said. It also was written by men in an age where many things we take for granted today were not understood: like volcano eruptions, comets, floods, earth quakes, etc...... they were looking for understanding in a world they didnt understand. the only explaination was some form of god or some form of magic.

i think you gotta have faith in something. without it, especially in extreme situations, there is no point in continuing. when all hope is lost, you can only have faith.

I don't have the answer to those metaphysical questions.
But I do not feel the need to adopt a whole cultural and ethical system just to fill the void of my ignorance. Especially if that system clearly contradicts what I do know. That is just the condition of man; there is more we don't know than we know.
There's the big bang, the formation of galaxies and evolution, of course, that goes a much further way to explaining what we do know is reliable evidence, but I'll admit that does not explain existence itself.
But I can turn your question back on you: Why do you assume Christianity has the only possible explanation? Why not Islam? How about the teachings of Zoroaster? The Mayan myths of Genesis? Or the Greek?

The trouble comes from the fact that sayings
become false because everything changes,
including language. Do your own research to
confirm that there is no universal useage of
the english word "god." That term is , and has been,
"inoperative" -- for purposes of communication.

You might want to come with all your friends and
enemies to this new Yahoo eGroup : Atheists
for Jesus , where the whole objective is to have a conversation about Jesus , without using
the useless "god" word. After all -- Jesus did
not run around stamping his foot and arguing
the case that he was "god." Sometimes , religious exercises
can become words only. Surely -- that's not true religion of any kind.

well i honestly don't believe in Jesus. There's also a movie out proving he's fake which you can see a trailer for at thegodmovie.com, but anyways. I believe we came from monkeys/apes. Look at twhat scientists discovered. Our face and bone structure are identical to that of a monkey. How do we know Jesus isn't just a pen name? Pen names were popular back then and someone could have just been too scared to tell who they were really were. I think Jesus is a hoax/fake. Just watch the movie trailer at thegodmovie.com and you'll get some goo danswers. It's only like 3mins long.

People evolved into existence from other creatures, scientists figured that out. Look up evolution in a book or google it. As far as what I believe in, maybe some sort of a higher power, but specifically the God that was made up by men. When I pray, it is to whoever might be listening. I believe that Jesus existed, but I don't believe he was the son of God.

The question of where everything ultimately came from is not well answered by either religion or science. A theist might say that God made the universe and God is eternal. But you could just as easily say that the universe is eternal all by itself. Neither answer is particularly satisfying. You either end up with an infinite regress of cause and effect, or you end up with one thing lasting forever. It's a mystery, and always has been. Learn to love the mystery.

I believed when I was a child in Sunday school. I was even baptized. But when I got into my early teens, many things happened. I saw the Mars Viking landers land on another planet, I watched Carl Sagans Cosmos TV show, I read Darwin's Origin of Species, I watched National Geographic TV shows.
All of this eventually lead me to understand how ridiculous the bible and religion were. I even remember sitting in Sunday school as a seven year old and thinking to myself "No way! That is just silly!"
So, by my mid/late teens I was an Atheist. I answer to no one but myself, my morals, my standards and my values. I live life for myself (and my wife) and for no god or sky faerie.
And do you know what? I am happier than a VAST majority of religious people I have known. They all live under a black hope, a fuzzy wish, an obscure desire. They live in constant fear.

I have faith however misplaced in humanity. As such I believe that we as humans are capable of answering many previously unanswered questions thfough our SCIENCE and SCIENTIFIC study. Evolution is a process...our universe evolved (It was not created because the series of events involved in creation leads to a singularity not a plurality). Creation = Individual processes leading to a single outcome...Evolution =Multiple processes leading to multiple outcomes. A creation would be a statue...evolved beings would be dogs and cats or varietal flowers.

The God (assuming there is one) concept exists to answer the question(s) that remain unanswered: Why are we here?, etc. So long as science and philosiphy don't provide answers for those remaining questions folks will answer with God. PEACE!

How can you honestly believe that a higher being created all of this, When there is no scientific evidence of your thoery...There is however plenty of scientific FACT prooving that we have evolved over time to adapt to our habitat and enviornment. Religion all stems from one basic idealoligy of scriptures. ALL religion is exactly the same, They are the same story and they are all just that....A story. But if you need a crutch in life, Something to make you feel like your a good person and you have a purpose, Then by all means, Believe in a god or in a religion. I think you should believe in yourself and stop giving credit of everything you do to a make believe being.

ok so here's the thing... I definitely believe in God
... here's an outlook for those who don't ....

you may ask.. if God created all things.. then he created evil right?
but how could something that we say is good and all powerful create something that isn't good, something that is evil?
well I'll tell you this.. I've heard of a story about a college professor asked his students if they believed in God. One of them gave an answer that was totally true.
the student asked the professor... Is there such a thing as heat? the professor answered. yes then the boy asked.. is there such a thing as cold? the professor answered again yes.
the student then said... but acording to science... isn't it true that their is no such thing as actual 'cold' ? there is only the absence of heat... just like light ... there is no such thing as dark... it's just the absence of light...

Evil isn't what got created... it is just the absence of God.
God gave us free will so that this world would chose Him..
why would He create robots that did what ever he would..
It's like when you want some one to love you.. you want them to chose you... if everyone loved you... then that love wouldn't matter cause it's a given thing.
We are here because God want a life to grow and have intellegence... it's like when you think of evolution
how can we go about and think that a simple thing.. like a pen... wasn't created by something bigger... this earth is so much more complex than a pen.. in yet we refuse to believe that something much greater created it???...
God is real. he's all around us.
