I used to do a ton of volunteer work as a teen. I just never hear anyone mention anything except a job or a boufriend...nothing for someone's benefit.

At the shelter we get very few young people. They come in for a while and think its fun to walk dogs for about a month and then they quit coming. The volunteers that have been faithful are around 40 to 50 years old. We have one group that comes in on a special ed program 2 times a week but the kids change every 3 or 4 months.

My teen is getting lots of volunteer opportunities as a Girl Scout (she is not in a troop, but independently registered as a Juliette).

So far she helps plan and run a week long overnight camp, works at day camp and twilight camps, and does various service projects around our community.

At her Junior High School graduation, she got a special award for the number of hours she volunteered.

Actually, youth service is getting more and more popular. I did Americorps last year, all of those type of programs are growing with more and more young adults interested in volunteering.

Here's an article on a study of teen volunteering, you can find a lot of others if you google it like I just did: http://www.afpnet.org/ka/ka-3.cfm?content_item_id=23088&folder_id=914
Perfect example of people thinking the worst of the younger generation.

I'm overwhelmed with requests from teens who want to volunteer. Many teens are starting their own volunteering projects after nonprofits don't followup quickly to their requests to volunteer. Also, many teens are getting active in political causes, like campaigns to spay and neuter animals, starting PFLAG chapters at their schools, or working for environmental awareness. I think most organizations don't have the resources to create appropriate volunteering opportunities for all of the teens interested in such. As for organizations that don't have many teen volunteers -- I have to wonder how they recruit (do they use MySpace, VolunteerMatch, Craigslist or outreach to schools?).

In NH most high schools require volunteer hours for a graduation requirement. I know a lot of boy and girl scouts who volunteer and many other kids too.
