I have really long hair to the middle of my waist with bangs growing out to the beginning of my mouth. Sometimes people ask me if I am going to donate to Locks of Love, but I really don't want to. I'd "like to" but I really love my hair so much, and I find other ways to donate to worthy causes. One time I gave all of my dimes that I had to March of Dimes at a tanning salon because I felt so sad. My mom and me left the place and I told her I wanted to go back in and contribute. It made me so sad and I felt tons better after.
I just want to fill the void in other ways, like helping people. I love my hair, and it's precious to me. I've cried many times in the years because I used to get it cut short and now it's finally longer than it ever has been in my life.
When I get older, though, and have enough money I want to start a foundation for something. I really want to make a difference, and I feel like I need to do something to make up for it.

You should not made to feel guilty about not wanting to cut off your hair!! If you've cried about getting it short in the past, then that will most probably happen if you do it again. You're obviously not selfish because you feel bad about the charity and you want to do something to help! It's great that you want to help, and good luck finding something that you can do that won't leave you upset! You should be proud of yourself for wanting to help! x

I don't think your selfish. I donated my long red hair to locks for love last spring and I almost started crying even though I was never really all that attached to it. I would recommend doing locks for love but only if you really believe it will help someone all that much. If you are already having second thoughts on this then i think you should go with your instinct. If you don't, you may regret it for a really long time. Shorter cuts dont even look very good on some people. I remember last year when i cut my hair, i hated my cut and wore it up every single day. I hope you really choose to do what your instinct tells you and end up with the right choice for you. Good Luck!

No you are not selfish at all. It's your hair, that you love, and it's your right to have something that is yours and you can enjoy. And how can you question that you are selfish when you like to donate in other ways as well...and you even want to organize a foundation. That's great! Good for you, grow that hair out!

I don't think it's selfish. I know how hard it is to part with long hair. Locks of Love may also take monetary donations as well, and that would also be a great way to help.

I don't think cancer patients would feel very good about receiving a wig from someones hair, just because the rest of the world guilt tripped her into cutting her hair. It's yours, it precious to you, you are not a selfish person. If those people think it's so important, they should be growing their hair out themselves so they can cut their own hair and donate it.

I think you have bigger problems if you think your hair is what makes you. Yes, this makes you vain, and selfish. Sorry to break it to you honey, but I am a stylsit and I can tell you that waist length hair probably looks tacky. I would never allow anyone to sit in my chair that cried over a hair cut. It always grows back for as long as you have it, so maybe you should look into not believing your hair makes you the person you are because thats just simple thinking. Sorry, most other people especially stylists would feel the same, and no one wants hair from someone that cries over donating their hair i would consider it bad kharma to take hair from someone that made such a big deal about losing it anyway. People donate because they love to help others out not because they feel guilty! i once gave 19inches because I wanted to not because I felt like I had to, it grew back just fine.

I don't think you're selfish at all. In fact I've always had my hair cut short because my hair was sooo thick. I really hated it so as an adult I'm letting it grow long.

I agree with Kim N. A truly grateful person would be happy while getting their long waist length hair cut to give to someone that may not even get a chance to have hair. Vain people cry over it just not looking right because it's too short for themselves and then when the opportunity of giving comes around, they feel guilty because they think in the back of their minds, "But, omg I like have to grow it all back again...ugh, maybe I shouldn't do it". They feel that they are losing a part of what makes them up. You are selfish, sorry to break it to you.

I would say you are just very happy with yourself all the way around. Physically, mentally and spiritually. The world needs more people like you. Good luck to you.
