The depictions are based on humanities experience of God as well. So the throughout the bible you must look through that prism. It doesn't mean it isn't real or not inspired. But an understanding of justice is a beginning to understanding God and later you can move toward Love on the other side of the spectrum. As an example of this progress you might consider Jesus' words when speaking of divorce. He said you Moses allowed it due to the stubborness of the people. Also, it is obviously better to defend your country in war then not to care about it. Yet you may also want to promote peace and be more diplomatic. Both approaches may be good. And God desires our full understanding and for humanity to grow within.

Correct that God does not change, incorrect that His law does/has not change

Consider that God predicted that He would change His law long before the time of Christ, during the Old Testament

Christ is the God of the Old and New Testament. Nothing that was made was not made without him, and since he created us, he knows what He is doing. There is a clean sweeping promised that will make anything that happened in the Old Testament look like child's play. When food becomes putrid, you throw it out.

It is the same God. The "violence" in the Old Testament was a direct result of the sinful nature of the people.

When God of all time gives instructions for people to do something, He is the one that has vengeance against those that will not obey Him. He is the creator, therefore the "boss" of all that will happen. We live like He says and everything will be wonderful. We don't and we pay for it by losing our position in the kingdom that would have been ours if we had followed His advice.
