When the church was first converting the heathens, it was their policy to use the existing holy sites for Christian worship.
They also usurped the midwinter solstice as Christ's birthday, as pagans regarded it as the sun's birthday. If you want to know what pagans used to do, look at the church. They took it over wholesale. This way, they could say to the pagans 'See! this god is exactly like your god.You must call god Jesus now' Once they were in a position of power, the old gods became devils & the rites were all done to the Christian god. Strange.

Many of the things that are done and believed in the Catholic church come from the Apocrypha. This is a collection of books written after the last prophet in the old testament and the coming of Christ.
There is no inspired foundation for the Apocrypha, and has therefore been left out of the Bible. However, the Catholic church uses much of what is written there for their practices.

I would consider them more ritualistic than pagan. To say they are pagan is an incredible insult. There are many things the catholics practice in obedience of tradition set forth by some of the original apostles. There are also things that I dont agree with, being Christian, but the important thing is that they believe in having a relationship with God, and the Catholic church, though brash on many occasions, is not afraid to stand up to anyone. I have great respect for their faith despite doctrinal differences of opinion.

All denominations do. Most are there from older days when they tried to convert pagans. To try and win the pagans over they allowed some of the traditions to come. (christmas, easter, etc)
Bible says not to do this.

Possibly because until about 600 years ago there wasn't even a Bible to read, and until about 100-150 years ago the vast majority of Catholics (as any people) could not read.

Because when trying to recruit "pagan" cultures to the church, they used the pagan rituals already in place so the pagans could relate to the church. This made it easier to convert them.

Understand that they are told not to read Gods word because they cant understand it. The priest is to interpret it for them (the priesthood was done away with when Jesus died on the cross and allowed man direct communication with Him). A Bishop just recently told his followers to begin to call God Allah so they could begin to connect with Muslims

Believe me I've heard all the hype about all the churches. I even try to smile when opening the door to the missionary door knockers. It looks weird to most outside their religion, we must thrive to find our common ground. At my church we have lots of other religion and churches visit and speak. We have hope house that gives to the community aid and food, and we have across country community services to help as large a population as we can fund. In other countries as well. We live in a big world and must strive to get along.

Because Catholics worship the European Pope and are not Christians (aka Protestants).
European Catholicism and Christianity (aka Protestantism) are two different non-profit religions.
Christianity (aka Protestantism) worships God, not the Pope.
