I had that - it turned our to be dislocated. The dentist referred me to the specialist and the osteopath clicked it back for me. It was painful for 10 seconds then it was fine again. Now I just have to be really careful.
Get some help.

THIS IS A GOOD QUESTION AND THERE IS A RIGHT ANSWER.
THE TYPICAL MOUTHGARD YOU CAN BUY AT WALMART WILL NOT WORK TO STOP THE JAW PAIN.
WHY NOT?
IT WAS NEVER DESIGNED TO DO SO.
SO WHAT CAN BE DONE?
YOUR DENTIST HAS TO MAKE YOU AN N.T.I. BRUXISM APPLIANCE. SEE THE LINKS BELOW.
ps. tmj problems are due to grinding at night

It could be this thing called TMG. You would have to look it up. If your jaw hurts when you eat hard candy, chew gum, eat food in general, or it just sometimes hurts, the it is TMG. You should go see the dentist about it.

You probably have temporomandibular joint disorder, a form of arthritis which is usually caused by malocclusion or misalignment of your teeth (or dentures, oops!). You need to see your dentist, my dear.

It happens to me too. I don't know what it is but if you move your jaw around a bunch and then let it crack, it will eventually go away.
GOD BLESS
