This depends on the Country you are from. If you are from a Country within the EU/EEA and over 21 with a full licence for at least 12 months try visiting www.insuredaily.co.uk

Subject to being able to fit the acceptance criteria, you can purchase temporary insurance cover for between 1-28 days with the owners permission.

My insurrance (in the states) is automatic. My insurance covers the car as long as whoever is driving has permission to drive it from me. However that insurance only covers the car the health insurance attached does not roll over. Each company is different so like everybody else said call their insurance company and see what the process is.

Normally only the owner or registered keeper can insure a car in the UK.

If you hire a car, the hire company will arrange insurance.
If you borrow a car from a friend or relative, they will have to add you as a named driver to their insurance policy.

Yep. Minimum time is one week. Just phone the owners insurance company and add your name to their insurance for the duration. Best if the owner makes the call.

The owner of the car can put you on the insurance as an additional driver if you supply him with details such as age, licence details etc.

Of course, a reputable hire company can arrange this with relative ease so you're fully legal. I hope you enjoy your stay!
