Basically, the Sky Fairy is just like your God, but is called a Sky Fairy. Same God, different name. But in addition to the sky fairy, there is also a TV fairy, toaster fairy, etc etc. Anytime you don't know how something works, basically a fairy is responsible. There is, of course, a reasonable explanation for how those things work, but theists like to just assign a fairy, and move on.

The "sky fairy" is synonomous with 'god' - the one who supposedly inhabits a mythological place called 'heaven', and who is magical like a fairy having the ability to bypass the laws of physics.

Its not so much of a fairy as it is some type of pasta. I can see how one would be confused though.
