No. As the mother of nine children I avoided naps by age 3. An older child that naps doesn't want to go to bed at night at a reasonable hour. Meantime so many school systems today have all day kindergarten so a child age 5 needs to leave napping behind long before he has to stay awake for a school day. Years ago half day kindergartenrs "napped" or rested at school but no more. All dayers learn all day.

The answer... some do, some dont. It depends on many things, from how early they get woke up, to how stressed they are by the days events. The required Nap Time is a quiet time for the kids that need one. I have seen 3yr olds that dont always take there nap. Its OK as long as the child learns to respect the group and lay quietly.

My five year olds took naps because they were tired. They went to kindergarten for half a day & when they came home in the afternoon, they had their lunch, then they curled up on the couch with their favorite blanket & watched Sesame Street, Electric Co., etc. & fell asleep & slept well for an hour or so. I used that time to sit down, relax, & read a magazine.

I never took one, and received many spankings for not laying down as a wee one, then I hit kindergarten, and had to lie in the dark for a while to satisfy em. I think it is a bad idea because I have noticed that adults do what they are taught as children, and I was always amazed at the number of my co-workers who suddenly started yawning and slowing down at 1:30 or so when the old "Nap time" hit em. Every child has a different biological clock and different physical patterns. As usual in our society we take one bandaid and try to make it
fit everyone. It simply does not. (p.s. I raised four children, did
not make them take naps. But one took one anyway. LOL)

Naps are not as important for a child who is 5 as it is for younger children .the main thing is they need more sleep than 8 hours a night so if they are getting 9-10 hours of sleep a night don't worry about it

I have a five yr. ols and she no longer has to take naps. At school she has a book and belly time where the lay down with books. So i do the same at home. It is just quiet time and no noise. Sometimes she falls asleep sometimes she doesn't, but at least she takes the time to wind down. It does help with calming them down!

I think that 5 yr olds take naps so that they are well rested for the remainder of the day.

They are???
Never heard of a school in the UK that's even equipped for that. My kids, and all their friends, had abandoned them altogether by age 3, for pity's sake.
If it can't make it through the day without a nap at 5yo, either there's something radically the matter with it or it needs a MUCH earlier bed-time.

I have never understood the concept of "making a child" take a nap. I've raised 6 children, and I still don't get it. My kids slept when they were tired.
