I have a video camera and want to know if I can record into the computer using the camera without using a disc to record it on first. Essentially, I want to use it like a web cam and record it as well. Can I capture without enabling the record on the camera?

It is a Hitachi DV camera-it normally records to mini discs. I believe it is a firewire port-1394.

I've read the manual, it doesn't mention how it works with other programs.

You should be able to. One thing I have found is that you have to eject the tape and leave the cassette door open otherwise the camera will shut off after a short period to conserve battery.

Just plug in the firewire cable and launch whatever program you would normally use to capture the video and give it a try.

You have not specified the make or model of camera -- they are all different.

If it has an IEEE1394 (aka iLink or firewire) connection, then this may be possible. The camera's instruction manual will tell you.

Read the manual.
With my camcorder I can use it as a webcam.
