I hear that a common way to start an interveiw is for the interviewer to ask the interveiwee to tell a joke. I would like to be prepared if this is asked of me in an upcoming interview and I can not think of any appropriate and funny jokes.

I would turn this into an opportunity to open the interview on your terms. Tell a story about something that happened to you, something humorous but not negative, and how you overcame it.

My example: I was about to give a presentation to a group when a young woman in the back said I wasnt the cute guy she had seen from my company in the past. Nice way to meet a client new to me! By the end of our time together she was ok with me even though I wasnt the cute guy she's seen before.

Jokes in interviews are land mines, think through how you an use it an a way to take control of the interview.

I have never been told a joke during an interview, nor have I told a joke during an interview. Generally, the person holding the interview has fit you into their already busy schedule so being short and to the point is in your best interest.

the only "appropriate" joke in any social situation is one about yourself or your profession. any other subject denigrates someone else.

Since i'm a nerdy geek, mba/cpa, ex-banker, sometimes trader and investor and wear glasses, I have plenty of material. However, I NEVER tell lawyer or religious jokes because I'm not a lawyer nor a member of an organized religion.

There are no appropriate and funny jokes to tell at interview. If you are asked that (which is a really poor interviewing technique), you could smile and say something like, "Oh, no, I believe that telling jokes is like walking through a mine field." If they continue to press you, you can just say, "No, really, it's just a personal principle of mine." And smile again. What are they going to do, ask you to violate your personal principles? An answer like that isn't offensive, and you may even impress them with your self-confidence and sense of integrity.

Don't waste the interviewer's time with jokes. They're interested in assessing your qualifications and they don't have time to fool around. Telling jokes will simply make you look unprofessional. Even if the interviewer gives you the courtesy of continuing the interview, you will have eliminated yourself from consideration in the first minute.
