They have monitored the brainwaves and functional regions of the brains in newborns. Those associated with memory are functional from birth, indicating that they form a bond of memory with their mother, and that bond grows each day. They know that the greatest sense used to gain these bonds is smell, after that its sight, and touch.

I dont think theres a genetic way to describe it, its brain function- every ones genes provide that development.
