America purchased the land of Mexico.

New Mexico was part Spanish and French owned. The Spanish area called New Spain was governed in Mexico city. The Mexican rebelled against Spanish rule in 1821 and overthrew the local government. The rebels then offered the country back to Spain but the Spanish kingdom wanted nothing to do with them.

In 1846 Mexican troops attacked American troops on American Soil, Texas had just joined the Union and there was a boarder dispute. The resulting was that America declared war on Mexico. The resulting battles caused massive losses to the Mexican army and with the northern states also rebelling against Mexican rule it was an easy victory. Mexico was forced to sign a peace agreement allowing America to buy the newly gained land, half the price it had originally offered to pay.

The American government established the New Mexico Territory on September 9, 1850 after defeating Mexico in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 with Santa Fe ("Holy Faith") as its capital.

Yeah right, just like we stole that big city on islands from the Duke of York, or that land from Jersey. And New Berlin Wisconsin should go back to Germany.

It's a name. The people who settled there, in the United States, wanted to keep just the name of the country they'd left behind.

People need to read their history if they can read. The United States purchased the land after the war. The name was chosen by the voters of the territory and was ratified. Now if you miss informed Mexicans would just get off your high horses and work as hard putting your own country together as you do trying to get int ours than maybe you would not have to sneak over the borders

We have a 'New England'...did we steal that???no...it is merely to differentiate it from the "old England"
We also have New Jersey and New Hampshire and New York which are differentiated from the British regions of Jersey, Hampshire, and York.
So the state of New Mexico is 'new' merely to differentiate it from 'old Mexico'.

BTW...New Mexico along with much of the southwest US was won from Mexico as a result of the US winning the Mexican War. in the mid 1800's... So the US 'didn't' steal it...but it was won as terms of surrender by Mexico.

The US PAID Mexico $18M for the US SW in the Treaty Of Guadalupe. Mexico took payment and then squandered it. Not OUR problem.

We took that sparsely populated and wholly undeveloped land after the US kicked Mexican butt all the way to the "halls of Montezuma".

The fact is that what is now Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and California has become what it is because Americans made it what it is today. They would otherwise be broken down, poverty-stricken, underdeveloped cesspools, like what Mexico is today, with 25% of the population seeking to escape to a better country.

There are more people flocking to the American Eagle than to the Mexican buzzard. Why is that? Hmmm?

We have a state named New Mexico because, after we BOUGHT it, the voters chose statehood, and that was the name chosen.
