Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.
Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.
It won't be a Hollywood movie style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.
Good article and scientific paper about future effects (if we do nothing to slow it down).

Global warming is the THEORY that
1) increased greenhouse gasses will trap heat in the atmosphere causing a rise in atmospheric temperatures.
2) This will cause an increase in land and ocean temperatures
3)which in turn will cause the ice caps to melt and flood the coasts.
Check with the Goddard Institute and NASA. They have been keeping track of atmospheric temperatures since 1979. In the almost 30 years they have been keeping records there has been no increase in atmospheric temperatures.
Look at ALL the land temperature records. Some places they go back as far as 1826. They show an overall DECREASE in average temperatures. New York City shows an increase of 5 degrees. This is one of the big indicators the global warming proponents use as "proof" of global warming. In fact this 5 degree temp increase is due to the fact that the population of NY has grown by 6000% since 1826.
The ice caps are not melting. 90% of the earths ice is in Antartica. The thickness of the southern ice cap has been INCREASING overall for over 20 years. The global warming people claim the melting glaciers "prove" global warming. There are over 2,000 glaciers world wide and less than 200 have been studied in depth. Of this 10% studied some are slowly melting but many are "surging" by as much as 100 feet per day.
There has been an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. In the past 100 years the levels have risen by 60 parts per million. If this keeps on at current rates we will have problems in about 20,000 years.
What do you call a theory that all the physical evidence refutes?

global warming is BAD. It when chlorine gets sucked up into the air and then attaches its self to the Ozone Layer which is located at the Stratosphere. The Ozone layer is minimized 100,000 times. As the ozone layer gets smaller than more UV light get into the Earth, which heats up everything stuff like this can happen...
1. glaciers melt and then there will be an increase in sea level.
2. UV light can cause skin cancer, catroaxe and eye damage.
3. Plant are animals will die from the heat.

Bob's link are very good!
In summary the extent of the effects are not known but they could include: (realize these are potential effects which could range from slight to major)
Sea level rise: displacing tens of millions of people (think Hurricane Katrina all over the world) likely disease, famine , war.
Shifting climate patterns: farm belts move, deserts shift, floods, droughts leading to economic shifts, food shortages, more displaced people, war (think African droughts, famine, upheaval which may, in fact, be an early effect of warming)
Weather instability: a few degrees translates into a massive amount of energy. A few degrees of ocean temperature rise can mean the difference in a Category 1 or Category 5 hurricane. Potential for more hurricanes, tornados, droughts, floods, wildfires, etc.
Cascading effects: the world is a vastly interconnected system which we do not fully understand. It may be self correcting enough to limit these effects. Or we may reach a tipping point where a new balance must be re-established. Some models show ocean currents changing (leading, ironically, to a new ice age in Europe), arctic areas thawing (leading to tropical diseases spreading north) , tundra thawing (releasing massive amounts of methane causing masive warming), and ocean warming causing lower oceanic oxygen levels killing much marine life and acidifying the atmosphere.
Now these catastrophic events are unknown and maybe the warming can stabilze at a few degrees limiting the effects to minor wars and famine, disease. But do we really want to risk it?

Weather results as the interaction of three things. They are water vapor, air pressure and temperature. Change any of the three and you change weather. Go to http://www.thermoguy.com/globalwarming-heatgain.html to see a brief summary of 17,000 hours of research on global warming causes. There is graphic temperature images showing you what is happening beyond our visible spectrum.

global warming is the effect of the greenhouse effect. greenhouse effect means the emission of carbon dioxide and this gas traps the heat the earth absorbs from the sun. that's it

DEFINITION:
"An increase in the near surface temperature of the Earth. Global warming has occurred in the distant past as the result of natural influences, but the term is most often used to refer to the warming predicted to occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases."

in case you go with to receive supply funds for climate analyze, do you think of which you will get a cheque in case you're saying," i want the supply, as i think of that i will coach that the figures that the present paradigm is predicated upon are incorrect" ? the large environmentalist, David Bellamy, has been silenced, and refused airtime. there continues to be no shown causative link between the quantity of Co2 in the ambience, and an strengthen in international temperatures. The WWWF pictures of the polar bears swimming have been taken in the Arctic summer time; whilst the ice cap partly melts, as they could no longer arise to image in the wintry climate. The ice grow to be too thick! The East-Anglian uni analyze figures. "Oh! The figures do no longer adventure our expectancies. Oh nicely. shop quiet. simply by fact all of us understand that we are proper." whilst the perception, and the religion is greater important than squarely dealing with the valid doubts of quite some non supply-supported scientists, technological know-how has been superceded by way of non secular zealots. As Oliver Cromwell colourfully suggested." I pray thee, in the bowels of Christ, evaluate that thou mayest be incorrect."
