The truth is nobody knows.

Cancer is caused when normal cells change so that they grow in an uncontrolled way. The uncontrolled growth causes a tumour to form. If not treated, the tumour can cause problems by invading normal tissues nearby or by causing pressure on other body structures.

Nobody knows what causes this to happen, though many people, usually those who have never had or studied cancer, have a pet theory.

Smoking has been linked to lung cancer, and sun exposure to skin cancer, though by no means everyone exposed to these risks gets cancer.

You are already getting answers telling you that it is down to diet. I was a vegan (no animal products at all) who ate organic fruit and veg, juiced, exercised, avoided caffeine and never smoked. I got grade 3 cancer. My diet was and is probably healthier than most, but it didn't stop me getting cancer, it didn't cure me and I'm not relying on it to prevent recurrence.

In my opinion, bad luck is a major factor in getting cancer, no matter how much people who know nothing about it want to blame the victim.

Cancer is actually a group of many related diseases that all have to do with cells. Cells are the very small units that make up all living things, including the human body. There are billions of cells in each person's body.

Cancer happens when cells that are not normal grow and spread very fast. Normal body cells grow and divide and know to stop growing. Over time, they also die. Unlike these normal cells, cancer cells just continue to grow and divide out of control and don't die.

Cancer cells usually group or clump together to form tumors (say: too-mers). A growing tumor becomes a lump of cancer cells that can destroy the normal cells around the tumor and damage the body's healthy tissues. This can make someone very sick.

Sometimes cancer cells break away from the original tumor and travel to other areas of the body, where they keep growing and can go on to form new tumors. This is how cancer spreads. The spread of a tumor to a new place in the body is called metastasis (say: meh-tas-tuh-sis).
Causes of Cancer

You probably know a kid who had chickenpox - maybe even you. But you probably don't know any kids who've had cancer. If you packed a large football stadium with kids, probably only one child in that stadium would have cancer.

Doctors aren't sure why some people get cancer and others don't. They do know that cancer is not contagious. You can't catch cancer from someone else who has it. Cancer isn't caused by germs, like colds or the flu are. So don't be afraid of other kids - or anyone else - with cancer. You can talk to, play with, and hug someone with cancer.

Kids can't get cancer from anything they do either. Some kids think that a bump on the head causes brain cancer or that bad people get cancer. This isn't true! Kids don't do anything wrong to get cancer. But some unhealthy habits, especially cigarette smoking or drinking too much alcohol every day, can make you a lot more likely to get cancer when you become an adult.

No one knows for sure there are many theories. The number one cause of cancer is smoking, this not only causes lung cancer but, bladder, stomach, colon etc.

One theory is that we all have cancer cells and some develop into cancer and some don,t.

Another theory is that cancer is caused by a virus.

Some scientists think that cancer is familial that is some families are more prone to get cancer than others. This seems believable due to the increased risk of breast cancer in woman that have female relatives that have had breast cancer.

If you have poor exercise, eating and health routines, your system gets run down and has less resistance to disease. Our organs and entire bodies were made to run on a healthy diet. IT IS A MUST AS IS EXERCISE.

There are many types of cancer, more and less aggressive. Melanoma is one of the most aggressive. This summer we were forced to learn more than we wanted to know about it.

Suggestions to avoid it: Use sunscreen DAILY. Skin cancers are basil cell,(mild) squamous (more aggressive) and Melanoma (very aggressive). An unusual mole can be very aggressive melanoma (My husband had all three)

Avoid Junk foods and fried and eat veggies, lean meats, whole grains and fruits. Keep your immune system healthy to fight off the diseases that might try to get a foot hold. Exercise daily, we walk, briskly two miles a night.

Keep your weight under control.

Take a healthy dose of Multiple vitamins to make up for the vitamins you miss in your diet.

Work at staying healthy, when you are old it is hard to be sick.

Good Luck.

In 100's of different ways

just as there are are 100s of different sorts of cancer you can get it from spending too long in the sun, from our food, smoking, sex , eating the wrong foods, drinking too much, pollution or just because they were unlucky.

Probably best not too think about it too much otherwise you would probably never get out of bed

Cancer is caused by a mutation in the gentic code of the cell. Intense sunrays over long periods of time, Cigarette smoke, etc will mutate the cell and cause it to replicate uncontrolably.
