My experience with it suggests it goes away on its own. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can help.

Fortunately and, in most cases, it *is* possible to cure Avoidant Personality Disorder/Syndrome. A lot of times people with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) also develop this disorder as well and many who actively seek help (self-help in some cases, though it would be BEST to get professional help if you can afford it or find someone who'll work a deal with you) are able to find a way to break the cycle. Easier said than done, that's to be expected but if you allow this to rule you now, it'll take over in the long run (if it hasn't already). Don't let that stuff on TV or the news kid you - there are no longer any normal people and for a great many reasons. A great quote from Anais Nin (a French poet of many nationalities and, without a doubt, a VERY checkered past) can sum it up with what seems little effort: "And the day came when the risk to remain closed in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Carl Jung has one that's as profound as it is simple: "I have never encountered a difficulty that was not truly the difficulty of myself." Also, "As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being." The first link I posted is to an online website that also sells self-suggestion tapes (which is like the step just before self hypnosis tapes but you're able to hear everything and can request transcripts of their material. The main point is to relax enough to get into a suggestive state of mind. It works mostly on the subconscious level no matter how aware you are of the situation. That might be able to help break the initial fear or avoidance issues. Just make sure to check out the page and other links on the site - the text articles might be able to help you with your current disposition. Make sure to keep in mind that it'll come slowly to you; don't expect too much from yourself if you feel you can't match your own standards, assuming that you do such. Positive distraction can be a good thing as long as you don't mask the real problem, should you feel the pressure of one. If nothing else, you could push yourself to research things such as philosophy, psychology, art, existentialism (especially with the Carl Jung quotes if you find yourself wanting a different outlook on things...). Basically put, the pondering of existence itself. Every day is a lesson in patience, among other things. You have the world at your fingertips. If nothing else, consider this your transition. (Good luck, man. I hope things turn around for you.)

Where did you get the diagnosis? Are you sure it isn't Social Phobia? Social Phobia can be treated with medication. If you thought of the diagnosis yourself or if you got your information from a test on the internet, maybe you don't really have it--those things aren't very reliable.

Personality Disorders usually don't respond well to medication--but sometimes therapy is helpful. If the person can recognize something is wrong with their behavior, that is showing a great deal of progress already.

I'm not sure what is available in Chennai, maybe you should try to find a psychiatrist or any medical doctor.
