I thought the idea of religion was to help each other out. I tried to follow religion a long time ago, but couldn't keep it up what with so many bad things happening to innocent people. (Please dont send links to religious websites, as its too late now, so much for the promised land, the fighting hasnt stopped since that story was written)

Same reason there is so much war over real estate. People want what they want, and they will use whatever means they can to justify it. The fact that people use religion to defend their wars doesn't make the religion wrong necessarily, though there can truly only be one possible correct religion, contrary to popular belief. People are naturally nasty and self seeking.

Look for truth in what is written, not in what people do in response to what is written for their own agenda.

The problem here is that people think that because a group claims to be part of a religious belief its that belief that causes the wars

That is just plain ignorant.
There as never been a war fought that religion was the only reason. Its more often over power, land and control that is vield in religion so people with little to no education or self thought will join up and think its just.

You can site all the things you want like the Crusades and the Inquistion.. you would be wrong.

The Crusades were not about saving the Holy land from the Muslims. It was about the Church ie Europe controlling the trade in the Middle East.

The Inquistion was about scarying people so they could hold power.

There isn't. You are viewing the whole of history with a view coloured by the current problems with some Islamic people.

Wars and conflicts not particularly related to religion: Napoleonic Wars, Crimean war, Boer war, Russo–Japanese War, 1st World War, Russian Revolution, Spanish civil war, Chinese Civil War, Second Sino-Japanese War, 2nd World War, Korean War, Vietnam wars, South Atlantic.

Better question.
Why is there so much hatred and war relating to people?

Religion has been given a bad name and the blame for many wars, but in history the biggest wars of all, have come about through Seclurism.

I totally agree with you on this one.
The religions that I have looked at all seem to preach about being kind and helping one another, but all people do is fight about it!
I think that if you follow a religion, then that is your choice, nobody has a right to say wether it is right or wrong.
Let people believe what they want.
Me I just believe that we are all human and have blood running through our veins. It shouldn't matter what rligion, colour or country you are from.
Let's just all get on and stop with the power mad!
Go in peace and find happiness.

I believe that it is because in most religions the doctrine is not questionable, that is, it is laid down as the only truth and you either accept it or you don't. In many religions of the world today there are consequences for not accepting the doctrine. For example in Christianity the consequence is that you will go to hell when you die and be tortured forever. Not all religions have such a sever consequence but nearly all require that you accept the doctrine. There are a few that don't require you to accept any doctrine - Unitarian being one example.

Get your facts straight. World War I was caused by an assination and faned by all the treaties in place at the time, millions died. World War II was caused because Hitler, not a religious character, descided to attack, millions died. Stalin, not a religious character either, killed millions inside the Soviet Union. Which 'religions' killed the millions of these characters alone? None!!

If religion did not exist, people would use something else as a basis for war--ethnicity, geography, philosophy, economic status. That is just the way people are.

Actually religion is used as an excuse by the powerful, the real reason for wars are power and money.

Throughout history more crimes have been committed in the name of religion than for any other reason.
I have a theory that if we all woke up one morning looking the same and having The same religion that by noon we would find something else to fight about.
