Whether he is evil or not I cannot judge, but that he is an atheist is true. I have done very little research on this (but I have done some) including reading a partial interview with the "author" about this movie. The "author" IS an atheist, who wrote this story to "combat" the story of "Narnia-The Lion, The witch, and the Wardrobe". It is his desire to turn CHILDREN away from God and to atheism. The premise of the story is that they kill God at the end. This movie has been condemned by most major religions and is NOT one my grandchildren will be seeing...EVER!

(CBS) "The Golden Compass" premiered Tuesday in London, and Hollywood hopes it is this holiday season's big blockbuster, but not if some conservative Christians can help it.

Some are calling for a boycott of the film when it opens in the United States on Dec. 5 because Phillip Pullman, author of the book the movie is based on, says he is an atheist.

"Religion is at its best when it is furthest away from power," Pullman told CBS News Correspondent Richard Roth. "As soon as it gets its hands on power, it's no good."

The film has a stellar cast - including Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig - and a big-budget. But the book version has been called anti-Catholic. It tells the story of a young girl's battle against a mysterious organization steeped in spiritual overtones, which is seeking to rule the world.

Some critics claim the book and the movie are really an attack on religion and the Catholic League is leading the fight.

It won't reach theaters until December 7, but The Golden Compass -- which adapts the first installment in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy -- already has some people up in arms, and the author doesn't seem to mind one bit.

Of course, Pullman is no stranger to controversy; his books have long been targeted as anti-Catholic by various media watchdog groups, and even though Compass director Chris Weitz took pains to whitewash the story's more overtly religious themes for the film, that hasn't prevented boycott threats from the Catholic league.

Pullman made an appearance in New York last week, and MTV Movies was on hand to get his answers to questions about His Dark Materials and The Golden Compass. He didn't pull any punches in his responses:

Pullman [described] how he finds the "Lord of the Rings" books trivial in their lack of asking big questions and doesn't find C.S. Lewis' answers to the big questions in the "Narnia" books satisfying.

the man himself said he set out to undermine christianity and i find it funny for someone who hates tolkien and Lewis to borrow so heavelly from both just proves who he is and what he is about the books have blatant slams on christianity even for a supposed "fantasy adventure"
Here is a quote from Phillip Pullman , He told the washington post for a piece published in Feb 2001 "I am trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief".
That being said is fine good luck trying friend you cant. There is more....
Consider this oft-quoted line from Ruta Skadi, an important character and witch in the trilogy. She says that the Church throughout all history has tried to control every natural impulse, then adds, "That%u2019s what the church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling."

Another character, Mary Malone, a scientist who used to be a nun, declares that Christianity is a "very powerful and convincing mistake, that%u2019s all."

That being said if you agree with him fine but Narnia and or Middle Earth never set out to slam anyone but to expand upon Christian virtue (notice Gandalph never wanted to touch the ring of power out of fear knowing mans heart is weak and will fail and give in to it's temptation) and that was it.
This Kook is cannot hide his bitterness and lets it shine on the page and i get's passed of as a "story for the whole family"
Anyway if there is anyone in here who does not hate God and does Love the Lord and his virtue i suggest staying away from this one or coming out angry and if you have kids dont let this pied piper get in their ears with this blatant Narnia rip off with a hate filled twist. File it under Anathema and take them to see the bee movie again or somthing...

Type in Golden Compass on wikipedia, and you will see that the original name, or the basis for the movie comes from something called His Dark Materials.

It is speculated that this is the anti-Christ alternative to Narnia.

Just as a note...many authors are atheists. If you find an author/writer you like who is not Christian, will you boycott their books/movies? Just for the fact that they are not in "your club"? As for this movie, I'd suggest giving it a chance if it looks like a movie that is interesting to you, and ignore the hype. Use your mind to determine if you consider it an evil movie, but don't just bash it because of hearsay. That's very closed-minded.

I think we have to be very cautious of what our children see..what may seem non harmless to us adults..may be buried very deep in our children's subconcious...just look at the world today..its crazy..look at all the murdering, rapes, assesinations, violations, no brotherhood, discrimination..where do u think it all comes from..the farther we move from Christ the more this things come to us, we are so self involved we forget we were created by God and we forget we owe him praise , obedience and respect. I have heard alot of remarks about this movie too, I do not think I will see it with my son...I usually do not like to encourage him seeing witchcrafty movies, or movies that lead into believing a witch or dark magic saves the world and humanity...do some research on the movie and u will see....Ain't the Devil trying to get into our heads and minds...like he has no tomorrow??

It's just more junk someone is hoping to make money on, and they expect the Christians will pay to see it without using their minds as to whether or not it is something they should be seeing.
Decades ago, the churches had a lot more strength in determining things like this. Boycotts were effective, and even caused the industry to begin a ratings system so people wouldn't just stop going to the theaters altogether.
These days, they don't care one wit about how people feel. They argue you should spend your dollar for their work.
Jesus said we should take care about what we see, and what we hear. One reason being, it plants ideas into our minds.
Personally, I would not see this movie. For several reasons.

I am not a fan of James Bond but it's sad to note that you haven't mentioned the movie "GOLDFINGER" my favorite bassey song.

It's good to have a fellow chatter here who knows the correct demarcation line among catholics (Romanish as I perceive it to be) and christians. But don't forget there are false christians (those who sell God's words in the Bible).

I don't know if it is out yet. The writer of the book said that he wrote it because he wanted an alternative to the Chronicles of Narnia. So he made it to be the opposit of Narnia.
