Most digital cameras have a fully automatic mode. I would get one with large LCD screen and image stabilization. For example, Canon A570 IS.
- 2.5" LCD
- lens has image stabilization
- 7.1 Megapixels
- Face detection
- Use rechargeable AA batteries

Features on Digital Cameras are simple enough to add. So, most are complicated if a person try to learn all the features. Those that are very plain are not good cameras for taking quality pictures. My mother is 79 years old and has a Kodak EasyShare C653. She can turn it on, zoom in/out and push the button. When she has pictures on it, she can plug it into the computer and it download to her default file in it own dated folder and she has learned to right click the folder to rename. Then she can play a slide show.
That's it. She not understand all the fancy details or setting the time and date. Usually I will do any technical stuff she need like changing the battery. LOL!
The Kodaks are fairly cheap. I thinking there some around $100 maybe less if a person shop around now for Christmas sales. There others too, but, I not know prices. Fuji makes some good cameras that get under $100.

I agree with The Cat. The Canon A570 - or any Canon point and shoot with image stabilization will help make great pics. Use it on full auto. couldn't be easier.
Also, get her a card reader and teach her to drag and drop her photos from the card to the computer so she doesn't have to deal with the camera's software program. And she can use AA batteries and won't need to mess with a charger.

All digicams, cheap and dear, Canon and Nikon, require basic knowledge (setting mode, taking picture, reviewing picture, saving picture) and there's no way around this.
I'll bet your mom would feel a whole lot more comfortable with a film camera.

Cheap and simple to use. Cheap to me would be Nikon Coolpix L10. Stores are selling it for $95- also consider Canon PowerShot A460. Adorama sellin it for $112-+ shipping. I would think you set on auto and fire away. Prices gotten from Website

Get an older style one from eBay that just takes photos and not have all the video etc - that's a good start.
