I'd say fairly common...after all, he is a stranger! I think I was afraid of Santa and would cry on his lap up until I was about 3...

Yes, it's a very common fear. I know it can be disappointing to you - this is the first Christmas that she's able to really be involved - but I feel the best idea would be to not force her to have anything to do with Santa.
Maybe you could read stories about him, and talk about him in general, but not necessarily have to go near him. Next year it's likely to be different.

Of course it is! Think about it - we take the time to teach our kids about stranger danger, and not to go with anyone who offers them candy or toys. Then we bring them to see some strange old man who asks them to sit on his lap and promises to give them toys! That's why my son was terrified of him at that age. Now that he's 3, I tell him that it's OK because my husband and I know Santa and we said it's fine. So now he's over it, and loves Santa. Give it another year or so.

Yes it is a common fear. All three of my children were afraid of Santa at that age. My oldest daughter slapped Santa, my middle daughter yelled in his ear, and my youngest my son peed on Santa.

Well.. kids are afraid of all sorts of things... I had a kid in my class who was terrified of feathers.
but if you think about it .. why not be afraid of santa..
shes not old enough to fully grasp the concept that he brings her free stuff once a year..
all she gets to see is some obese man with white hair covering his face, in a bright red suit, he's surrounded by bright lights, in the middle of a public place, with everyone staring, and shes expected to sit on his lap, and act as if he's some long lost uncle.
Some kids find it fun and exciting.. and others.. find it to strange for their liking and it frightens them.

I would say fairly common but my view is a bit skewed since Santa still scares the begeezus out of me and I'm close to 30 (my hubby is taking my son to sit on his lap because I can't bring myself to even consider doing it and don't want my irrational fear to pass on to my son).

Yes, it is a common fear. It took nearly another year before my kids accustomed themselves, then there was no stopping them. Give the child a couple of years. You should be ok.
