"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him."
Matthew 6:5-8
And in language we can actually understand....
"When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

I don't recall about Yeshua ben Joseph, but wasn't there something in the gospel by St. Mark, or was it Matthew, about praying in private, in a closet if I recall correctly? And didn't he also say something about it being prideful and wrong to pray in public?
It's a pity modern Christians don't abide by that. Being "in the closet" would have a whole different meaning! And I wouldn't have to put up with these annoying public prayers at school functions, county commission meetings, and the like.
Because "church and state" notwithstanding, if you live in a fundie-dominated area, that's what you have to put up with. I'm an atheist, and thus immune to the bad feeling, but I just imagine what the Indian immigrants' kids in our area feel every time a preacher opens up in a public place, and I just want to cry for them.

you're rather connecting with the middle of Jesus' teachings then and seeing how misaligned some kinds of Christianity are from even what Jesus teaches in the Bible, to no longer point out all that grow to be skipped over of the Bible. the skill of prayer is nicely-known inspite of the undeniable fact that, and whilst human beings come at the same time to wish at the same time in a circle of equality, the place all are called equals with the skill to cocreate with God, that's an exceedingly good venture. in spite of the undeniable fact that, whilst public prayer is used as the thank you to sell faith, or whilst it contains the thought that one faith or way is greater desirable than others, that's what Jesus warned approximately. My journey of the church is that when having experienced lots of them, maximum of them do no longer prepare human beings approximately genuine prayer. The prayers are an commercial. What human beings want is to be empowered to discover a connection to God and Christ that's very own and devotional. i think of quite some human beings can experience that something is off, in basic terms such as you, yet possibly have not checked out issues deeply adequate.

Jesus always dealt with the Heart of Man;
In other Words what is the Intent of the Heart?
To be Recognized by others?
You can pull Scripture out of it"s Setting and come up with anything;Example the Rich Man and Lazarus; You look at that Scripture by itself,and come away with the Conclusion that being Poor
will get You into Heaven; It will not;

Matthew 6:
"And when you make your prayers, be not like the false-hearted men, who take pleasure in getting up and saying their prayers in the Synagogues and at the street turnings so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward. But when you make your prayer, go into your private room, and, shutting the door, say a prayer to your Father in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward. And in your prayer do not make use of the same words again and again, as the Gentiles do: for they have the idea that God will give attention to them because of the number of their words. So be not like them; because your Father has knowledge of your needs even before you make your requests to him."
Then Jesus says "pray like this" and that's where The Lord's Prayer starts

I agree with the guy above about what Jesus actually said; but does anyone think these football game and congress session
"prayers" are really addressed to God? They're just a civic convention, and an opportunity for the people giving them to hear themselves speak.

Basically it is for us not to be a hypocrite and pray and preach aloud in public, for others to hear and see!!
What you do is in private, it is between you and the lord, the angels the spirits, no one else needs to know no one else needs to see.
Look within yourself and believe and trust, as the lord is with us.

He said not to pray to be seen by men, but remember one thing, these people who are trying remove God from HIS world can never stop the power of prayer.
Matthew 6
Prayer
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Jesus apparently prayed in public in front of groups of several thousand people.
There are two instances of fish and chips...oops fish and loaves...in the Bible.
