Our children are only as safe as we make them.
Can you think of a time in history when they were better off?
50 years ago children could be beaten pretty good by a parent and people looked the other way.
100 years ago, they might have been expected to do dangerous jobs on a family farm.
During the Industrial Revolution, children were put to work in mines and dangerous factories.
Throughout history, children died by the thousands from preventable diseases like influenza, diarrhea, smallpox, polio, or the plague.
In Western countries, most of these tragedies are in the past.
There are still places, where children struggle simply to survive.
Our children are as safe as we make them.

Our children are safer than any children in history have been. If you consider everything, and look at the statistics about health and safety and life span our children come out on top. There are dozens of diseases that don't exist anymore that used to be a threat to our children. Our awareness of the future and how to prepare for it makes this a far safer world than the ones previous children have grown up in. We are also much more educated, as a society, and know how to cope with some things better than people have in the past. All that said, we are very fearful because of all the dreadful things we hear about from the media. Child abuse, for instance, existed far more in previous years but it is only being talked about now so we feel that our children are in danger. Child abductions have always been very rare (by strangers) but they are so awful and create such a frenzy that the media makes a huge thing about them and we are lead to believe they are truly someting we need to concern ourselves with. I wouldn't be surprised that if they did a research peoject about it, they would find that our children are more likely to be harmed by not washing their hands properly than by going for a walk by themselves!
As a society, I honestly believe we are taught to worry about the wrong things.

Children have NEVER been safe in this world since the beginning of the history of man. Whether it be wild animals, neighboring hostile tribes, disease, injury, the elements, war, slavery, abusive adults. Children are by their very nature at risk. That is why it is the parents responsibility to take care of them.

No they aren't. I'm even afraid to have them sleep in their own bedrooms, seriously. I have a two year old and a three month old. Kids aren't safe at all. Its up to us to watch over them when ever we take them out. In stores, playing outside anywhere... If you watch whats been going on or what has happened to so many innocent children out there. I may be exagerating but I'd rather take good care of them. too many bad people out there, sex offenders out of jail etc.

Probably not. The fact is that something can happen at any time. However, you just can't dwell on this. You take the precautions you can, and go live your life. If you don't, you become a paranoid agoraphobic and that's not a life.

No one is safe any more but train and teach them well and love them and then pray for them to be safe.
