Jehovah's Witness religion does not believe in receiving blood transfusions. They took a passage from the bible and interpreted it literally to mean no taking of blood by any means. (can't remember the scripture without looking it up).
My mother's sister married a JW when she was young. She commenced to start a family and raised all four children the JW way. I can remember back in the early 1970s when her youngest son, my then 11 year old cousin, was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors wanted to do blood transfusions to prolong his life. This woman (my aunt) would not let the doctors give blood transfusions to her son, and he died just a few weeks later. So sad. So stupid. My aunt is now in her late 70s, and is basically a walking vegetable. She doesn't know who anybody is, doesn't even recognize my mother, her own sister. But she still walks around spouting JW propaganda.
Edit: BTW, Watchtower publications are published by Jehovah's Witness religion/organization.

Jehovah's Witnesses. Although I don't quite understand how taxes pay for them not to have blood transfusions? Surely having a blood transfusion would cost the hospitals more?

And its purely the choice of the person to accept or refuse a blood transfusion. And it won't cost you anything so why the concern.

Actually, the taking of blood transfusions is a very high risk, and for several reasons... IIt's like playing Russian roulette with one's health.
Opting for more effective / less much less risky alternative treatments makes much more sense!
They claim that BTs are necessary for oxygenation of the body, BUT, transfused blood is incapable of carrying oxygen for 24 hours after it is transfused!
And, that is only one of the medical problems in BTs...*

"WHOLE" blood transfusions. It is in obedience to a directive from god...in the Bible.
(ACTS 15:20) but to write them to abstain from things polluted by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood.
Pagan nations used and spilt blood in their sacrifices to their gods.
(LEVITICUS 3:17) “‘It is a statute to time indefinite for YOUR generations, in all YOUR dwelling places: YOU must not eat any fat or any blood at all.’”
(LEVITICUS 7:26-27) “‘And YOU must not eat any blood in any places where YOU dwell, whether that of fowl or that of beast. 27Â Any soul who eats any blood, that soul must be cut off from his people.’”
The blood of animals killed for food had to be drained into the ground.
Now we know we CAN actually eat blood, [ blood sausage] so the command is about obedience rather than the effect blood has on us.
Since modern doctors have studied blood, they know now that some blood components do not cross the placenta of a mother and a baby. The babies blood is always separate from the mothers, EXCEPT in the case of some components that deliver from the mother to the baby. It is God's way of protecting the baby. If He allows that, through his creation, he would also allow similar protection from adult disease. Like in the case of treating leukemia.
I have personally survived triple bypass surgery by a skilled surgeon without having to resort to blood transfusions.
And i did it out of obedience.
No one wants to die, through trauma, but obedience is more important.
Those who do die through blood loss and are obedient are promised a resurrection. Death is not the final end.
(REVELATION 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

Suicidal??? How come there's almost 7 MILLION Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide?
Acts 15:28,29- For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to you, except these necessary things, to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from BLOOD and from things strangled and from fornication. If you carefully keep yourselves from these things, you will prosper. Good health to you!”
EDIT: I don't know what governmental system you live under, but how does my refusal to accept a blood transfusion affect your tax paying?

christian scientists. they believe god heals all wounds. they don't believe in doctors, hospitals, or current medical treatments of any kind. and while children with asthma are suffocating, people with broken limbs are getting gangrene, and diabetics are going into comas, the state does step in and provide whatever care they can, at the cost of joe taxpayer.
