Religion, in general, is not peaceful.
Religion is based on emotional hooks, not reason. It plays on group think to enhance the "us vs them" attitude that groups naturally have. This is made even more so when government promotes the religion. Then you have nationalism and religion both playing on each other.
Good men tend to do good things. Bad men tend to do bad things. But to get good men to do bad things takes religion.

Islam, like all major religions is completely ambiguous. It relies on interpretation in order for it to function.
However, there are a lot of crazy people who take the writings too literally.
For example, in Christianity, there are very few people who actually believe that Johah lived in a whale yet they completely believe that Jesus died and was resurrected.
There are many peaceful and fulfilled Islamics, they have rational hearts and minds which allow for a humane interpretation of their holy teachings.
Basically, to answer your question, because most holy books are littered with euphemisms and metaphors, a person could twist and contort the words to mean almost anything. It requires a sound mind and an interest in humanity to decipher a correct and valid interpretation of any doctrine.

They? Who is they? The religion is peaceful and perfect - HOWEVER, those who follow it are not. Many people choose to interpret various aspects of the religion in different ways and that's how come you get so many different sects (liie deominations) The more extreme sect (sort of like the christian evangelicals) tends to take things literally without considering context or using logical thought. (Can you tell I'm not a fan of this one?) Anyway, it's not only people from this sect that seem to be violent. It's basically anyone who's in the middle of a war or occupation and have had enough. In the end it's not really about the religion, it's about living peacefully.
And by the way, if you MUST listen to the media then at least turn on the BBC because they are a little less biased - not by much - but better than our media. Also, try looking at the other side as well just for kicks eh? Al jazeera has a site I think.

For every peaceful bit in the quran theres a bit that says its ok to kill non believers and do violence in the name of the prophet. Its called abgoration. Islam is evil, pure and simple. I also feel the same about christianity and judaism. Bet you if there was no religion the twin towers would still be there.

You can't say that a religion is peaceful. It just depends on whether or not the people that practice the religion are peaceful. You'd have to, like, take a poll and find out how many Islamic people are, or something. Haha.

it depends on interpretation. Historically, Islam has been more tolerant and peaceful than Christianity. If you read the Koran, like the bible, there are different interpretations. Many Muslims are peaceful, while other are not.
while one person pointed out that the Koran is not a peaceful book, neither is the bible, particularly the Old Testament and the book of revelation. If you have actually read both, which I have, and as I'm agnostic, I care little for both, I find the bible to be the more hateful and intolerant of the two.

hello how can you tell how peaceful a religion is just by watching the news, dumbasses ??OMG this is so getting on my nerves..if you really want to know the truth about Islam, you got to search for a reliable source...like an ulama, for instance. It's undeniable that muslim ppl also have some problems due to various reasons. but lets face it, it's not like christian or other religion is that harmony. a place like y/a is full of morons who judge something based on what published by the media

If you notice one common thread among the major religions in the world: They all claim to be religions of peace and love, while they are slaughtering one another...The only Christians I have ever seen (As a group) be truly forgiving peaceful pacifists are the Amish.
If I were a believer, I would probably admonish the poster of this question (if he is Christian) to get the plank out of his own eye first.

Their actions speak louder than their words, unfortunately.
It seems to be a religion of hate, from the way they are acting & reacting. The slightest provocation gets them all ready to burn, kill and destroy.
Edit: responding to 'Khalid49'...
I have no doubt that you guys are peaceful inside the mosque! It's what you do OUTSIDE the mosque that bugs me!
Edit: responding to 'Truth Only'....
Since Sept.11th, 2001, how often have you read or heard that Islam is a religion of peace? It isn’t. Islam is a system based on the use of physical power to reach one’s goals. Both the Qu’ran and the Hadith encourage Muslims to use the sword….to do battle….to shed blood. Most Muslims are peace-loving people, but Islam is not a religion of peace.
How can we explain this apparent contradiction? In Mecca, Muhammad was weak and oppressed. When he and his followers moved to Medina, he became strong. There is a vast difference between the tone and attitude of the revelations that came to Muhammad in Mecca and those that came in Medina. Both sets of revelations are included as parts of the Qu’ran. Consider these:
•In Mecca, he is ordered to be patient with those who oppose him (Qu’ran 73:10). In Medina he is ordered to kill them (Qu’ran 2:191).
•In Mecca he is ordered to be kind to Christians and Jews (Qu’ran 29:46). In Medina he is ordered to kill them if they do not convert to Islam (Qu’ran 9:29).
When Muslims quote qu’ranic verses that talk about peace, they are using the older teachings that, though still in the Qu’ran, were cancelled by the newer ones.

Sure it is, except for them that are asking for it for instance .. girls who go out in public (bit o' shopping maybe) without a male escort, women who want to divorce their husbands, any female who wants any kind of education beyond primary, anyone (male or female) who does not go to mosque five times a day, anyone who objects to the mosque loudspeakers waking everyone up every morning at sunrise, in fact pretty much anyone who doesn't listen to the local ammah (local priest/minister whatever he's called) .. for them it's a stoning .. to death as a matter of fact. Don't think it could happen? It's happening in many muslim countries.

Brother and sisters. ISLAM means PEACE/SUBMISSION TO ALLAH. Our and yours as well ALLAH (either you accept or do not accept) loves you and teaches us to love and care all the creations and certinally to every human. It is not our duty to convert/subvert and kill. Our duty is to explain right by our words and by our chracter. The choice is open for every individual to accept or reject.
