Assuming the following the right, tell me would you consider such a person a kafr/nonmuslim
He prays all the five prayers(salah) of the day, with sincere belief in One true God. He donates money to the poor(how much is required plus more),even though he is 17,just because he earns money and believes they should help to fight opression, prevent hunger, provide happiness to those lacking it
Although he hasnt yet gone for a pilgrimage, he reads the Quran out of his own accord.Despite "moderate upbringing", he is devoted to learning about his religion by reading books by scholars, and more importantly the noble Qur'an translated
He calls himself a shia-that is where his theological views originate from, and he calls for unity. His donations have gone to sunni countries Bangladesh,Pakistan and,God willing, will sponsor Palestinians
He has his flaws, but he has tried his best to be a good influence to soceity by deeds and devotion
If the following really describe a person is he a muslim?

No person in this world is free of an antagonist, even if he tried to live on top of a mountain alone.....Allah(swt) has given us remedies for these problems and as Muslims we should follow these examples before anything....

Quran 23: 96, 87, 98

You are a good man i do not see why you put yourself away or down. The true testament to a mouslem and to that of Allah is indeed our charity and our honesty. Allah knows that all man will make mistakes no man is perfect in his deed or his cause. There was a story an Imam told me that a man loved Allah so much but he woud con the wealthy out of their money to give to the poor in his name and Allah frowned on this. Then there was a man who had commitied a crime but was cheritable and true to his God. He was honest of his deeds. The Imam asked us which shall go to paradise? Remember this my friend all acts of charity and truth are worth 10 times more than a good deed.

Yes you are as much a muslim as I am. Brother, you don't have to bother what people say, as long as you are following the saviour of humanity, PROPHET MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.H) and you have your values in place ie; as per true islamic concept, DON'T BOTHER WHAT THE WORLD SAYS. This world has not spared PROPHETS(P.B.U.T), what makes you think you and I will be spared. Be honest to ALLAH as HE is the recorder of all deeds and HE will prove us what we truly are on the DAY OF JUDGEMENT. There is HADITH of PROPHET MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.H) where HE has clearly said, meaning of which is construed that, if a muslim calls another muslim as KAFIR and this other person has not done anything to deserve that title, the title goes back on the first person. I have this biography of PROPHET MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.H) which is a nobel prize winner and I have passed it on to lot of muslims and nonmuslims here, would you be interested? If yes, email me. Also, I invite you to visit my website, hope you like it.

salam!
brother i will just say that a person should not pass his or her judgement about someone whether he thinks the other person is a kafir, liar etc.
the judgement part belongs to Allah. i believe in peaceful and productive discussion/argument with the other person (if i have a disagreement with some of his acts), with Quran and Ahadis being the base of the arguments. but i dont go on giving my verdict about someone as it has been forbidden by our prophet. Allah knows all, and He knows what is in the hearts of the people.
edit: i like your politeness very much

Why would I call him a non-muslim? I have no right of calling such a person non-muslim. Shias are considered to be not true muslims, ( not all the of the shias because there are groups of shias too) because their creed is not as same as ours. the only Creed of ISlam is, LA ILAHA ILLALLAH MUHAMMADURRASULALLAH... but I have heard Shia's creed which is different from this only creed, in theirs they have added fatima tuz zohra..something like that, which is not true. When they pray they place a piece od rock or hard mud something when they go for Sajdah, which is wrong,,,, , They do not pray 5 times a day rather they pray collectively and their prayer timings are different, and many Shias do not believe in the good deeds of Hazrat Omar. So such believer cannot be stand as a muslim, because he is praying infront of Allah but at the same time ignoring the major facts and above all his Creed his different as well as his way of offering salah but still we have no right of calling them a non muslim. Its Allah to judge them. And May Allah guide us all to be on the right path.

Despite popular beleifs, the foremost quality of a TRUE Muslim is honesty and the ability to balance wordly needs and spiritual ones. The person described above seems to be true at heart, sincere and honest. He has his flaws, but then no one is perfect.
I am curious about your opinion of Muslims. I would like to hear it, even if it is in the negative.

He's a Muslim of course. All you idiots who call the Shias kafir have in turn called yourselves kafir! The Prophet has said that a person who calls another Muslim a kafir becomes himself a kafir. May Allah curse such ignorant people, or guide them to reightousness.
Anyway, if he is capable of going to hajj and isn't going then he is doing something very wrong. The Prophet (SAW) said that if a person is capable of going to hajj but does not go and dies without doing hajj he will be considered like a Jew or Christian (ahlul-kitab) in the eyes of God.

It all went ok until you came to that "He calls himself a shia-that is where his theological views originate from" part.
You might be surprised if I told you I am aware of mainstream Shia beliefs, I don't consider some extreme minorities among them to be of the mainstream Shia, but there is still a huge problem: invocating others than Allah s.w.t., namely calling Ahl Al-Bayt a.s. where they cannot respond.
Famous Iranian madad Jawad Zaker had a bunch of "emotional sayings", and that includes shirk like "there is no god but Fatimah", "my Lord is Hossain" etc. Ok, he was one man but most Shia rose to his defence.
Ayatolla Khomeini is another problem... What kind of people would follow such man? http://www.geocities.com/islampencereleri3/sayings_of_ayatollah_khomeini.htm
If Khomeini, Sistani, and them alike are the people you take knowledge from , this is where the problem lies.
The allegations that Abu Bakr r.a. was appointed khalifah by the will of majority are false. Nobody asked the majority. It was decided by the shura (council). Shia sources claim that Ali r.a. never pledged allegiance to any of the 3 rightly guided khulafaa', but that would make Ali r.a. a selfish man, which he definitely was not. If it was really that Mohammad s.a.w.s. promised the khilafah to Ali, and that exclusively Ahl Al-Bayt was to rule, he would have made it clear to all people.
Believing that 12 imams are infallible and that the 12th is Imam Al-Mahdi is another problem. Can you quote any ayat that proves the doctrine of imamat? If it's one of the most important issues in Islam, it should be mentioned in Al-Qur'an, as are tawheed, nubuwwah, ma'ad, adl, hajj, salaat, zakat, fast...
Do you really believe a man can be in hiding over 1,000 years? Even Nooh a.s. called to Islam 950 years, and we know that people used to have longer lifespan than they have now. Imam Reza said: "if Allah wanted to extend the life of any of his servants for the need of people to him, he would have extended the life of his Prophet". Isn't the way the Shia leader is chosen now more than similar to the way Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq was chosen as the first khalifah, something that Shia much criticise?

I try not to judge anybody, because that is not my job. I also realize that people (including myself) are not perfect and we will always make mistakes.
Anyways, do not worry about what humans think of you. You should only worry about Allah (swt). He and only him will judge you and it will not be your friend, your mother, or anybody on this website. Ignore the rest of us and focus on pleasing Allah (swt).
