There's a purebred persian at the county shelter-I guess he has no lower teeth, he's dirty, and front de-clawed. Doesn't really show well in a cage since he's filthy. I was thinking about adopting him myself and finding a home for him.

Any thoughts?

This shelter just asks $25 a cat and a valid ID. There isn't a contract, and they just kill the cats after a few weeks.

Some of the other answers could be right. A lot of shelters/rescues have it worked into their adoption contract that if you cannot keep the animal for whatever reason you must return the animal to the shelter. BUT since you are dealing with a county shelter, they may not. It is something you should look into though. Tell them that you are considering adoption and would like to look over their adoption contract. They shouldn't have a problem with this at all. See if they have ANYTHING at all in there that states you must return the cat if you cannot keep the animal. If not then go ahead with your plan.

If they do though then you have two options. One would be to adopt the cat and keep the cat as a pet for yourself or two, see about being a foster home for the cat. I hope you are able to help this kitty since as you said; the cat isn't in the best condition to find a home. It truly is sad that this happens all the time. At least you want to do your part. Do everything you can to help this cat. I suppose you could adopt the cat and re-home the cat despite any clause in the contract about returning the animal and hope you don't get caught, but I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you feel the cat has no other chance besides you breaking the rule, then you do what you need too! The cats life is more important!

Good luck.

EDIT: Ok, if the shelter has no contract then go get that cat!! The cat really needs you and has no chance at a life without your help. Adopt the cat, give it a trip to a vet, maybe a trip to the groomer and then show it what real love can be!! Then do all you can to find the cat a wonderful home. Just be patient as it might take some time. Go save the kitty. Today! Let us know what happens!

You can't do that. The cat is the property of the shelter and once you sign the adoption papers you're telling them that you're going to keep this cat for its lifetime. And should there come a time that you can't keep it it MUST be returned to the shelter. You can't adopt it out to someone else. It's violating your contract. The reason shelters do this is because they want to approve who the cat is going to. Remember the big news story about Ellen Degeneres dog? Same situation. The adopter does NOT have the right to give the animal to whoever they choose.

Is this a no-kill shelter? If so then don't worry about it - this cat will find a home. If it isn't, then look for a no-kill cat shelter in the area and let them know about the cat. No-kill shelters often go to kill shelters and pick up the most adoptable animals. You could also look for a Persian rescue group in your area and let them know he's there.

Surprisingly enough Persians often show up at shelters. Their coats require constant grooming and people buying them on a whim don't think about this. Then the coat mats, they're too lazy to deal with it so they surrender it to a shelter or just toss it outside. The shelter I volunteer with always has at least a couple Persians there. Even recently had a gorgeous Chinchilla Persian with turquoise eyes.

You can't do that. What you want to do is FOSTER the cat. Talk to the shelter about that. You can take care of the cat, get him cleaned up and healthy, and you can even help try to find him a new home, but the adoption will be through the shelter. They can do the vet reference checks, home checks or whatever else they do.

Most places do not allow you to do that. When you adopt, you sign an agreement that if you are unable to care for the animal, then you must return the animal to the rescue. You cannot re-home them yourself.

Talk to them about it........what you should consider is FOSTERING.....the job of a foster parent is basically the same. Keeping the animal safe & happy until a permanent home comes along (of course, you'd still have to go through the shelter to find that home).

And if you can't find a home for him, are you going to be willing to keep him? You should talk to people you know now, friends, family people at work or school that might be interested in an animal rather then trying to adopt one and then trying to re-home.

Since the mission of most shelters is to place animals into permanent homes, I doubt they would allow this.

You may, however, want to look into fostering animals for shelters or rescue groups.
