Congrats on the first few steps into a much healthier life style. As someone else mentioned(but in a rude way) there is no such thing as a pollo-vegetarian. By definition a vegetarian is a person who chooses to consumer no fish, fowl, red meat, etc. no animal flesh. However, people get too hung up on labels. They think that eliminated one or two sources of meat makes them a vegetarian. IMO if you do not think your parent are going to support you than do not tell them the made up label of pollo-vegetarian. If you do decide to make the complete transition they will probably give you a hard time again. ie-What is wrong with being a vegetarian and still eating the chicken? Stuff like that. And most likely you will have to begin again convincing them that that a diet without any meat is healthy. I suggest sitting down with your parents and talking to them. Let them know you are making small steps toward becomming vegetarian over the next XX months. For now you are still going to eat chicken, as you make the switch, but as you get more comfortable with finding healthy and nutritionally complete meals you will switch over to a vegetarian diet. Something along thoughs lines may be a good way of letting your parents know. Find as much info as you can in order to be able to answer any questions your parents may have. You may want to go to the library and get a few cook books and books on vegetarian nutrition so your parents can read through them.

You should do whatever you think is right for you! I don't know your age...but your still living at home obviously. If you get an allowance or earn money, you can start buying alternative foods if your parents arent supportive. I'm quite sure they will be if you tell them how you feel. But you shouldn't have to argue your point across. If it's something you feel good about and think is a better choice for yourself, they should be understanding of that. As far as pollo vegetarian(ism), I think too many people put labels on these things. The only meat I've eaten over the last 10 or 12 years now is fish on occasion. But do what makes you feel good. The best advice I can give is to educate yourself. "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins is my favorite book that covers a wide variety of health effects caused by consuming animal products and many leading agency statistics. I think you'll enjoy. Good luck and eating healthy is in!

Words are coined and are changed all the time Michael, that’s the beauty of language, that it is used for communicating and is validated by its success in communication not by its inclusion in a dictionary. I know that you, and most people who are into this type of thing, knows what a pollo vegetarians is, so it is a successful word. it takes a couple years for newer words to get in the dictionary. They didn’t ask weather you think it is a valid and precise way of describing this particular diet, they asked what it is, and it is something up until the point where someone coins a better word for it and people stop using it.

Also, to the girl who thinks they want attention- if you do your diet for attention that does not mean that everyone else does. Some people just like to be able to describe their diet to people.

I get so sick of the vegetarian word police. The word vegetarian is not some sacred undefilable word that can only be used by card carrying PETA members, it’s just a way to describe a diet.

Anyway, pollo vegetarian implies someone who starts with a vegetarian diet, but allows for the eating of chicken. Items such as fish, milk and gelatin will vary per the individual.

They are people who eat chicken and pretend they are vegetarians as well. Vegetarians don't eat any animal flesh so Pollo Vegetarians are pretending they are vegetarians.

Krister---what the hell is "read" meat?....LOL

drutazo---you forgot pheasant, grouse and squab!!!

In all honesty, our alien friend has a good point. Even though the chicken eaters aren't vegers by definition they still probably have a better diet than most meaters.

Get a dictionary and look up "oxymoron." That is the definition of a "vegetarian" who eats meat.

It means that the only meat in the diet that they eat comes from poultry, ie chicken, turkey, duck, goose. Other than that they leave out all other sources of food that involves the killing of it.
