Broiling is direct heat from above. More closely related to grilling (direct heat from below) than baking. Baking is a heated chamber where the heat is evenly distributed on all sides.
Ovens primarily cook by convection (transfer of heat from a warmer area to a cooler area). There is minimal radiant heat involved in oven cooking.
Broiling (and grilling) cook by radiant heat (visible light) emitted by the broiler. Convection is a secondary source of cooking

When you choose bake this puts the heat below the oven and more heat is distributed around and over the food.
When you choose broil you basically have flame above the food cooking the food fast from the top of it but not evenly.
Broiling is done to food that cooks quickly and needs only to be heated from the top of the food. Baking envelopes the food, encases it uniformly and is for food that requires a lot longer time to cook.

As someone mentioned, broiling is cooking by direct heat; baking is cooking by the "ambient" heat surrounding the food. For the best results when broiling, leave the oven door ajar so you DON'T accumulate this warmed air and really DO just rely on the direct heat from the broiler. Broiling would more closely approximate grilling than would baking.

Broil is high temp, usually close to the element/flame, for short duration. In an oven it's the top element, but "flame-broiled" means cooked with flames, no direction specified. Broiling is often used to "finish" something with a nice toasty crust or for colour, like a meringue pie, or to melt cheese on top of a tuna sandwich.
Baking uses both elements.

Broiling uses a higher temperature, lower time, and less distance between the heat source and the food.

Broil is cooking on direct heat, possibly longer (like over a stove top) and baking is a dry heat like on oven that may not take as long as broiling, depending on what you're cooking.

Broil, we call grill as done under the top element inside the oven.
Baking is a term for foods like biscuits (cookies) or cakes, and food parcels.
Roasting is for turkeys hams etc and veggies, as a rule uncovered
