Vegans don't eat meat, eggs, dairy, or anything containing animal products, such as casein, whey, and gelatin.
Veganism is a lifestyle, not just what you eat. Vegans don’t wear leather, fur, or wool, buy products from companies that conduct non-required animal toxicity tests:

Or frequent zoos, rodeos, circuses, or other places where animals are held in captivity or forced to perform.
Also, it’s about economics. It doesn’t matter if you give the hardboiled egg on your salad to someone else. The restaurant gave you that egg, and are going to have to buy more to replace it. Economically, you might as well have eaten it.

Relax, vegans can eat sugar. Most major brands of cane sugar are filtered through charred animal bones and vegans will avoid those brands. Any brand of beet sugar is vegan and you can find vegan cane sugar at places like Whole Foods.

Sugar is refused "just in case." It's because the sugar might have been processed (whitened) with animal bone char. I called Domino sugar's 800 #. The customer service person says that there are a few sugar processing plants that might still use bone char, but not many. Eat sugar from processed foods and don't worry about it. Buy unbleached organic when you buy because it doesn't involve animal bone char.

Yes, you can have sugar. Some brands do refine cane sugar through bone char. Buy turbinado (raw) sugar, rapadura, evaporated cane juice, or beet sugar, and you will avoid that, since they are not refined.
Some products geared toward vegans will say the sugar is non-bone-char processd or label it as "evaporated cane juice."

some sugars are filtered through bone char or bleached with oyster shells.
Tate and Lyle ( in the UK ) state thier sugar is suitable for vegans - I have a letter from them.
Don't get frustrated, it'll get easier.

May I also recommend Stevia for use in coffee, tea and any liquids you want sweetened. You can buy it as an extract in health food stores. It is zero-calorie and natural (unlike splenda or aspartame).
