Hi, I'm in tenth grade and I'd like to try out for Cross Country next year. The problem is that I have asthma, and after and eighth of a mile or so it's difficult breathing. I have an inhaler, but it doesn't seem to work that well. Can you please tell me ways to effectively use my inhaler, as well as some other things I could do to breathe easier. That would be great.

Are you taking any preventive asthma medications? You should ask your doctor and parents about advair or singulair. Both of these medications can help prevent asthma attacks if taken on a regular, consistent basis. These mediciations have helped my son and he is athletic. Talk to your parents and Dr. Good Luck!

Go on to the above site and have a good read, its aimed at people with COPD but the advice holds good for asthma, study pursed lip breathing, it works great and requires no extra meds.
Always use your inhaler before you race.
One other point I will make is many asthmatics find they have more success with short burst events, you have the right idea staying fit will help your asthma.

To be a good cross country runner you have to run a lot. Maybe six days a week. You have to gradually build up your strength, endurance and stamina to the point where you can easily run the 3 mile course at a fast clip. So start running every day and see how it goes. Talk to your doctor. If you have breathing issues, you'll have to figure out a solution, like possibly the medicine that was mentioned. But every runner that runs has to build up their breathing skills. They have to be able to breath in and process oxygen in large quantites as they run. So start practicing and see how it goes.

dont let ur asthma run ur life player. trust me i have asthma to. i played Football both ways & Track all 4 yrs. you just have to push ur limites little by little. take a hit of ur inhaler b4 a run that help me. after running put ur hand over ur head to catch ur breath faster inhal through your nose out through ur mouth. stall away from milk and all that Crap.

u can ask ur dr. about advair or singulair? but watch out for side effect. advair was not that goog for me.
