A heart murmur is an extra or different sound heard while listening to the heartbeat. It is not a disease, and there are many different reasons for why someone might have one. My son was diagnosed at age 4 with one, saw a pediatric cardiologist, and had some testing. He was diagnosed with an "innocent" murmur-or one that is harmless. A lot of healthy children have innocent murmurs. An abnormal one, caused by a birth defect, can be diagnosed and treated. Has your cousin seen a heart doctor?

Heart murmurs are minor leaks in the heart valves. They are very common and they usually don't cause any problems. The doctors would recommend repairing the murmur if it was a problem, so, if the doc hasn't mentioned surgery, he/she must not think its anything to worry about.

one of the heart valves isn't working right, in terms of preventing backflow of blood through the valve. With a stethescope, you can hear the characteristic murmuring sound.

Basically, it is sort of a malfunction in the heart that can be corrected with proper help.
