High blood pressure develops gradually over time and there are no symptoms. The effect of Hypertension is to increase the likelihood of heart disease. Most forms of heart disease involve blocage of a blood vessel by a clot (thrombus) or embolus (fragment of a clot). Hypertension accelerates and promotes the formation of blood clots and thus makes you more to develop coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke etc. lifestyle changes can be made to lower your BP eg lower salt intake and exercise. Optimal BP is 120/80. prehypertension is between 120/80 and 140/90. Above 140/90 is hypertension

no short term effects. only longterm. in the longrun, you run a risk of having a heart trouble earlier in life than people with normal blood pressure. actually, high blood pressure is a very pleasant disease(no pains, no symptoms). it is called as the 'silent killer' by doctors. and lucky thing is, it is treatable, by changing lifestyle habits. do more walking, eat less salty food, etc.. and it's gone.
