My mother has Myelodysplasia, COPD, Diabetic and is in hospital at the minute. 2 months ago her blood results were: haemoglobin 10.4 after 2 units of blood, platelets 135, and white cells 4.9, neutropils 1.5.
On Monday her readings were: haemoglobin 8.3 after 2 units, platelets 11, white cells 3.2, neutropils 0.3.
Please someone tell me in laymans terms.
I know she has weeks rather than months left, the doctor has told us.

Firstly i'm sorry to hear about your mum, you must be worried sick!!!! to answer your question this means that the Myelodysplasia is getting worse. this syndrome is essentially a problem with the porduction of blood cells, which means that if she has any disease then the white blood cells are unable to fight infection and that her body is being slowly starved of oxygen hence the decreasing blood cell count (esp rbc's, which are responsible for oxygen circulation

She is losing blood from somewhere. Her pre-existing condition is also causing problems with her red blood cell production. Unless they can find a way to reverse this, it doesn't look good. I am sorry your mother is going through this.
