Yes, it is true for some people. I know a lot of fat vegetarians. If you eat too much and don't exercise enough, you are going to gain weight.

I am vegetarian, and I am overweight. My weight was pretty good until five years ago when I broke my knee. Now I'm less active and I have gained weight.

I was an overweight teenager. I became vegetarian in the my twenties and I lost weight. Now I'm 50 and I'm overweight again.

I've gained weight since I've become a vegetarian, but I'm still at a very healthy weight. It comes from eating more junk food, I'm an oreo junkie. It depends on how many calories the person, vegetarian or not, is eating and burning. If they are eating more calories than they are burning they will gain, if it's the other way around they will lose weight. Your friend is correct.

Yes some vegetarians are overweight. I lived in Dallas and one of my favorite places to eat was the Hari Krishna Temple. They did meals a few times a week. Most of them were a little overweight and some obese.... their diet while vegetarian, was high in sugar.

Also I think a lot depends on genetics. I eat everything and I am well in the right BMI (body mass index)... I also am an old guy, many teems eat everything and get away without gaining...

Vegetarianism is not synonymous with skinny. Sometimes vegetarians ARE fatter than meat eaters, but more often meat eaters are fatter than vegetarians. There's less obesity per capita amongst vegetarians.

Generally I think you'll find that Vegetarians are far slimmer than some meat eaters. But it depends on what other things vegetarians eat.If for instance they eat lots of candy and cookies they will put on weight. I eat meat, but only chicken and lean meat. I have lost weight. But your friend is quite wrong.

Everyone has a different body shape!
I know meat-eaters that are way thinner than I am, and I'm a vegetarian.
The fact that I don't eat meat doesn't guarantee any weight loss, it just means I'm healthier than meat-eaters!
:]

That's more a question of lifestyle and genetics...

If a vegetarian is consumming more than they're burning.. sure they'll be heavier... and vice versa.

You can't generalize like that... there are too many factors that contribute to the outcome of weight.

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm kinda fat. Problem is, I love cheese. Damn that tasty milkfat! If you sit around eating cashews or peanut butter all day long, you can get fat. It's how much you eat and how much you excersize. Also, metabolism. You can get fat with any diet if you eat too much and don't burn enough calories. Oh yeah- wine. I love me the wine...
