Some friends of ours just bought a new home and threw themselfs a house warming party. Is this normal or should someone else throw one for you?

It is totally normal. I mean, I wouldn't want someone else saying "I'm throwing you a housewarming at your house, have the place cleaned up right after you're all stressed from moving." It's whenever the homeowners (or even have moved into a new apartment) are settled in, things put away, and then invite friends over to see their new digs. If they were polite, they'd say "No gifts, please." Unless it was their first house or apt., then I might break the rule and get a gift. It depends on if you know they already have everything they need. In that case I'd take food or wine.

Yes, this is normal--when people buy a new home, they invite others in to help "warm" it...it's about asking friends over to make the house feel like more of a home. This is not like other parties (showers, bday parties, etc...) where guests are expected to bring gifts, so there is nothing wrong with hosting it yourself.

In general, you throw yourself a housewarming party and invite family and friends to see your new abode, although someone else Can. Mentioning gifts in the invitation is in bad taste if you are throwing it for yourself. Gifts are Not to be expected, the pleasure of the guests company is all that is desired.

If I knew them very well I might get a housewarming present that I knew they wanted, otherwise: non flowering plants or seeds, bathroom supplies, kitchen whimsy, candles, gag gift, picture frame,

A throwaway camera (or digital) for event can be used to make a collage of friends and family visiting this most important day.
I kind of like the idea of having a friends bouquet of faces in a floral design.

Shoot, I've even given pretty baskets of throw aways: Plates, cups, napkins, forks, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.

It's perfectly normal. When you buy your first house you are so excited that you want to have your friends over to see it. Take them a nice house warming gift.

Perfectly normal. Take a plant. They will think of you every time they look at it. I know that we still have some of the plants from our housewarming party 6 years ago.
