Can anyone recommend a good vegan or dairy-free cookbook? Particularly for desserts? And one that doesn't call for a lot of weird, hard-to-find ingredients?

BTW I can do eggs but not dairy. Thanks!

I'm not a vegetarian but eat many vegetarian dishes and I also collect cookbooks. There are two that I like a lot. One is by Deborah Madison called "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone".

The other is by Madhur Jaffrey and is called "Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian"

Both are excellent. The Madison won several awards as well.

Word of advice on cookbooks. Look for IAACP, James Beard or Julia Child award winners or nominees. They are usually solid choices.

Vegan with a Vengeance (Isa Chandra Moskowitz) is SO good. Veganomicon (Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero) is also really good, though I haven't had a chance to try as many recipes out of it yet 'cause it's new. They also have one out called "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" which is an adorable book of nothing but cupcakes (as if that was hard to guess!) There are occassionally hard-to-find ingredients in some of their recipes, but they are good about letting you know when you can leave something out or substitute something easier to find. I have only good things to say about all three (and no, I am not either of the authors!)

I stopped eating products with lactose about 4 years ago. However, I still use almost all my old recipes. I found out that almost all Kraft cheeses are lactose free. Also, I use goat milk in place of cow's milk. Through experimentation and a little bit of creativity I've found I can still make just about anything. If you go to Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, or a similar type market you'll find a lot of non-dairy substitutes for sour cream, butter, cheese, yogurt, and milk. Also, at Trader Joe's they have an "ice cream" made by Triple Rainbow that's called Soy Cream, it is by far the best replica of ice cream I have found. It has great flavor, excellent texture, and almost the same creamy taste of ice cream.

I have some really good vegan & vegetarian recipe books on my recipes page, especially the one called "The Joy of Vegan Baking". They are listed on the right side of the page:

"How it All Vegan" by Sarah Kramer and Tanya Barnard and "La Dolce Vegan" by Sarah Kramer (not so much the middle book, "Garden of Vegan") have some wonderful dessert recipes.
