I am having 6 friends for dinner on Sunday evening. I am serving a substantial entree and main, but would love to have fruit / cheese / olive platters in lieu of sticky, creamy desserts. My husband feels I ought to serve more traditional sweet desserts. What do you think? Please say honestly if you think my idea would be too disappointing .Thank you so much for any advice you can give - much appreciated.

Is there any way you could do both. I would love the fruit, cheese, and olive platters as I love salty things. But, there are always those people who live for dessert and are going to be disappointed. Good luck! Could you do a Fruit and cheese tray and add to bowls of dip next to it. One could be melted chocolate for the fruit. And, the other can be philadelphia cream cheese mixed with marshmallow fluff. Then they have something sweet with the fruit and cheese. Then you can have the olive platters. And, on the table you can have a fruit tart and a cheese cake. Why not?

Let me see. I've just had dinner and what would I like?

I like a good cup of java after dinner or a hot cup of Earl Grey tea.

I've also been enjoying biscotti with my tea and coffee.

A variety of cookies could be a light dessert.

Olives? Cheese? Fruit? Hmmmm. Maybe if the meal was lite?

Cheese? Got crackers? Ritz are the ones I like best.

Olives? Maybe a couple just for a taste.

Fruit? A fruit sampler plate? A variety?

Strawberries! Can you get good ones this time of year?

Cherries Flambé. Now, that's a fruit dish. Flame on baby.

Wait! Wait! Wait!

I found it! Here is a small blurb about it:

This party pizza includes a variety of tasty layers of sweet and fruity goodness. A scrumptious sugar-cookie crust starts off the pizza, followed by a layer of luscious cream cheese “sauce”. A colorful array of fresh fruit toppings creates the next layer. A fruity glaze and optional chocolate drizzle completes the pizza. (Fresh fruit is preferable to canned or frozen.) Depending on the season, use whatever fresh fruit is in stock.

Yum! That's yum. I say!

I dont see olives showing up after dinner, but I do understand the less-gooey alternative as being proper.
Perhaps a bit of a compromise? Maybe the fruit and dessert cheese tray in addition to some dinner mints, or chocolate covered fruits - maybe a liqueur as well?
I don't think every dinner requires a cake to be done well.
Good luck.

Your idea is a French tradition. A cheese course at the end of the meal may be too strange for some people's taste if they are not accustomed to it. Compromise by offering your platter and also a decadent dessert.

After a substantial (and no doubt delicious) entree and main, a fruit/cheese platter would be wonderful! Just make sure the fruit is fresh and the cheese is the best you can get (go to a market if possible). Go for it!

Just a thought... tiramisu, made with fresh mascarpone cheese, would be moreish enough to satisfy sweet tooths... yum... or fresh figs stuffed with mascarpone.... oh dear, got to go eat now....

Well 1st of all fruit/cheese/olives etc you would serve as an appetizer, not a dessert.Appetizers, Entree'and Main dishes are usually savory dishes. You wouldn't serve cheese and cracker after a meal. Sorry I would go with your Hubby and stick to sweet dessert and all desserts do not have to be sticky and creamy, you could serve chocolate cover strawberries, sorbet, pound cake etc. good luck...

When we have dinner parties I often find everyone is too full for desert especially something sickly sweet. Your platter is a great idea and perhaps you could serve some dry fruit and bell peppers stuffed with fromache. Figs dry or fresh would be nche wth the cheese and olive

Does it have to be one or the other? Can you do a cheese/fruit/olive tray (which is a fabulous idea) and add a large chunk of chocolate to be cut and eaten with the fruit? Perhaps you could do a few different types of chocolate and maybe some nuts.

I think a fruit and cheese tray is a nice substitute for sticky sugary desserts. Especially this close after the Holiday (if you are in the States). People are probably pied and caked out for a little while.

add a nice cream sauce, custard, or gelato to that fruit and you will be fine. If it is a substantial meal most people will not even be in the mood for desert and serving something light will be a nice surprise. Also consider serving a desert wine like a Moscat or Riesling.
