After four years together, my boyfriend was diagnosed with HPV (wart type), and I was diagnosed with it (non-wart type) 1.5 years after that. I understand HPV can have a long incubation period where it might go undetected. Did he cheat or not? Is it possible I had it first?

HPV sticks around for a VERY long time. It's entirely possible that he got it long BEFORE he met you. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that he got it AFTER he met you. There's no way to tell - you'll have to pay attention to the other signs of how the relationship is going.

It is impossible to determine exactly when you acquired an HPV infection or how long you have been infected. So, it is possible that you or your boyfriend contracted the virus from a previous partner.

The HPV virus is common and typically does not cause any problems. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 80 percent of women will get a genital type of HPV by the age of 50. In most cases, the body’s immune system fights off or suppresses the virus within one to two years. However, HPV can remain dormant in the cervical cells for a long period of time without being detected. If this occurs, the virus is inactive and won’t cause any problems unless it activates. Reactivation may be due to changes in your immune system.

Because of the fact that it can stay domant for years its really impossible to tell if he cheated on you and contracted the disease. When talking to him about it try not to accuse him right away. Be honest and talk about all the possibilities including cheating.
