Ok so I have been wanting to become a vegetarian for a long time cause I watched a movie on how they killed animals in the slaughter house and hated it so decided to take a stand, but found it hard to take my mind off of meat(mostly chicken) how can I get into becoming a vegetarian without having the cravings, and is this really a good thing?

If you eat vegetarian most of the time and have chicken or whatever just once in a while, you will be doing a great thing. Don't beat yourself up over what you eat. Try to eat good healthy food and be a healthy person. You could always buy free range chicken for the times when you have a craving. I haven't eaten any flesh since 1970, but that's because flesh grosses me out. Making sure that any animal products you do use come from well tended animals is very thoughtful and makes the world a better place.

I am all for finding ways to improve animal welfare in their farms or feed lots or slaughter houses. Realistically, people eat animals. It is in everyone's interest to make sure that the animals are healthy and the meat is safe and nutritious, even if I'm not eating any of it.

For me, it took a long time. I started out giving up certain things, red meat was first, then poultry, and then fish and other sea creatures. Occasionally, I'll still get cravings but I have not had meat in ten years.

There are some good meat substitutes (and many horrendous ones) but you can try to work with those.

If you are getting bad cravings, take things slow and also remember how animals were tortured. Think about WHY you want to be vegetarian (for animal rights) and that might be a motivator to cease your cravings.

Good luck

Hey I have a twin!

Ok, well if you can't handle cold turkey, then go slow. Cut out red meat for a month, then add turkey/duck/poultry, then fish, then chicken (since that's what you're craving).

It's an awesome thing to do. I suggest getting yourself educated. Go to the store and get a book about being a vegetarian. The one I have is A Complete Idiot's Guide to Being Vegetarian. It's a fabulous book.

Good luck!! And here's some websites::

When I became a vegetarian it took me about a month to work meat out of my regular diet, and a few more to stop eating it at all.
The key is to make your transition about eating MORE vegetarian foods, not less meat. If you are craving chicken then eat chicken, and don't feel guilty about it. Once you are in the habit of eating delicious and healthy vegetarian food, meat will phase out of your diet and you won't crave it at all. Worked for me!
Get a good vegetarian cookbook and start discovering all the yummy foods that you didn't know about as a meat eater! I suggest 'Vegan with a Vengeance' by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Also if it's available near you there is a magazine called 'Greens' with lots of yummy veggie recipes.
Good luck!

I had a hard time too when i first started. Think about why you don't want to eat meat when you have a craving. Or distract yourself somehow.
or If you can't just suddenly stop eating meat, go slowly. Stop eating meat at lunch for a few weeks, then at breakfast for a few more weeks then just stop all together. If you find yourself thinking you don't want to be vegetarian anymore, just stop!

You could try one of the many analogues out there. They're soy and/or wheat protein textured and seasoned to have a texture that sometimes (not always) mimics meat dishes.

And check out the book "Skinny *****" by Kim Barnouin and Rory Friedman. In the back is a list of packaged foods that are suitable for vegans, but read the labels anyway as formulas change.

Warm Regards. The biggest thing i should congratulate you that atleast becoming vegetarian thought crossed your mind which is a symptom of rise of punya karma as per Jainism & it also shows that you never spended time on analysing yourself buts its a fact like an altruistic there is hidden thirst in you to see good of all living beings let it be animals or humans. It displays you are good soul.

So i think respecting all living beings right to live may automatically discard your habit for Non-veg food.

And most probably if you start studing karma theory & what makes us take birth & live life.

I like Jain theory in which one analyses what he could have been in past life , whats his current life & what could be his next life bcoz of his deeds.

It could be possible that in past birth bcoz of good deeds you in this life got life of a Human & bcoz of some ill deeds your Past lifes beloved got life of an animal in this life . What if you come to know that animal whom you are eating was your beloved in past life.

Rest it will give you more joy for caring for animals life by avoiding non-vegetarian food than eating same.

Bcoz by eating Non-veg. food one gets satisfied in terms of taste but skipping same , showing love for all living beings irrespect of any creatures gives soul satisfaction.

Lets all get infected by mutual love for each other . Lets love be main diet.
