My son is three years old, and he's had his cough for three weeks now. It's a productive cough which means it's producing phlem and mucous. I've had mixed advice about giving him "milk" while he still has his cough. One parent says Not to because it will cause the phlem and mucous worse, and one parents says it's ok that the milk will cause some phlem but not to worry about it causing the cough worse. What have you heard about this? Or what is your experience on this? Any help/advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

It actually depends on the person. For many people, it makes no difference. For some, it can make a significant difference. Only one family member has ever seen a difference in having milk vs. not having milk when they have a cough.

However, if your 3 year old has had a cough for 3 weeks, you might consider taking him to the doc and checking for bronchitis.

Milk can cause your body to produce more mucous but it should not make the cold worse.

I've had severe asthma and lung infections all my life. I tell you from my experience, that any milk product makes it harder for me to breath when I have these attacks. My doctors' advice has always been to stay away from milk products while I am ill with this. Otherwise, I do drink milk.

Research has shown this idea to be a myth, particularly with low fat or nonfat dairy products.
I'd just steer clear of whole milk.

This was a topic on BabyCenter.com and they said this is a myth unless your child has an allergy to milk.
