In terms of raw numbers, probabaly india, and china. reasons range from religious to economic (poverty) to environement (desert terrain simply cannot support crop agriculture). although i would think that many third world communities particularly in Africa and Asia are "forced" to be vegetarians living on root crops and wild uncultivated vegetation due to extreme economic factors. Footnote, India also has one of the highest infant mortality rates, lowest life expectancy and high mlnutrition rates. in the world.

India has to be the highest.

India is really 53rd in Infant Mortality Rate, by the way.

I went to India in 1998 and it was difficult to even find a restaraunt that served meat (not that I wanted to). I don't know how to rank rates of vegetarianism by country, but I'm told the UK is very vegetarian friendly.
