My aunt just found out she is diabetic. She loves chocolates, or anything sweet. I have bought some blood sugar level monitors for her. I would like to get something for her that she would love to eat. Can any one suggest food/snack that is sugar free? And where can I get in Manhattan.

You've got to be kidding? Diabetes type II or I? If it is Diabetes type I, your aunt has lost her ability to make insulin in the beta cells of her pancreas. If it is Diabetes type II, your aunt's body has lost it's ability to use the insulin it is producing and the pancreas is most probably been overworked to the point of exhaustion and now you want to give her "DIET" sweets and ruin her liver too? The reason your aunt loves chocolates and sweets is for two reasons, most likely, she is deficient in magnesium and that usually means calcium as well, and she is also consuming way too many carbs and not enough good fats.

Americans are falling like flies to diabetes type II because they are listening to the so called "experts" telling them that then need to eat huge amounts of fruits and vegetables, avoid red meat and eat low fat.

There is NO culture in the world as long as the human race has been in existence that has generated healthy people from a diet like that. The studies that support that kind of diet are from agenda driven, profit motivated, companies that fund these studies to promote their products. The Food Industry in the U.S. has revenues exceeding ALL U.S. corporations combined. With that kind of money and well paid lobbyists, you can only imagine how this has happened. The food pyramid is bought and paid for by these corporations.

The best thing your aunt can do at this time, is to change her diet so she won't crave the sweets. The craving is her body crying out for good food, especially good oils and protein. Man's diet 12,000 years ago was 80% protein and fats, and 20% carbs. Today, it's 80-90% carbs and 10-20% protein and fats. And the fats are usually hydrogenated oils. We were not designed to eat that many carbs (vegetables & fruit).

A good example of healthy people that have no dental carries (tooth decay) and no heart disease (of which 3 out of 4 Americans are dying of) are the Eskimoes. These people eat nothing but Wild Animals and Wild fish for 9 months out of the year. Why then are we told to eat more fruits and vegetables and less red meat? It's because the food industry has created things like FEED LOTS for cows instead of letting them graze on grass and free to roam around. The Feed lot cows are unhealthy and give us huge amounts of omega 6 fatty acids that are inflammatory. We cook our food, pasteurize and homogenize the dairy products, and destroy our immune systems with flu shots, vaccines, and antibiotics and wonder why we are getting sick! Amazing. To top it off, the very expensive marketing being done by these corporations that practice "profit over health" are giving the American public garbage to eat.

About 80% of diabetes type II comes from a very small bacteria called "nanobacter." This little insidious germ is normally killed by the stomach acid, but because of the cooked food, antacids, and processed foods, the body produces less and less stomach acid as we age. This lack of stomach acid creates "acid reflux" because the 1.5 to 3.0 pH of the stomach cannot be reached due to the lack of this acid being produced. Now the bacteria don't get killed and they are left to invade the body. Nanobacter is responsible for heart disease, diabetes type II, and kidney failure in many ways.

In regard to your aunt, the stomach pH must be 1.5 - 3.0 for the digestive system to work properly. If the "chime" that enters the jejunum from the stomach is not acidic, the calcium, MAGNESIUM, and zinc will not be absorbed. If your aunt eats very little GOOD meats and lots of carbs (veggies & fruit) with little fat, she has set herself up for the diabetes type II because the body gets tired of this garbage and then refuses to let insulin do it's job in the cells to lower blood sugar levels.

The "sugar free" garbage put into foods generates formaldehyde in the liver and also causes your appetite to increase, not decrease! What a perfect way to promote eating more. Increase your appetite and convince you that you are better off by not eating sugar. Truly amazing!

There once was a thought that diabetics weren't allowed to have any sugar at all. Over the years this has changed and diatitians and endocrinologists (diabetes specialists) have done alot of research to figure out just what affects blood sugar.

So there are alot of "sugar free" products out there! You have to be careful though. Sugar free doesn't necessarily mean that. There are "sugar alcohols" in the products as well. This will affect the blood sugar in the same way. Also, sugar free products can cause diarrhea when eaten in excess due to the form of sugar substitute in them.

Carbohydrate counting is where we are in diabetic management. This means, if you think of the old American pyramid..there's 3 groups that are "carbs": Grains, Fruits and Dairy. If a food has a label on it it's easy to count the carbs..15grams of carb = 1 serving. So if a pack of crackers has 30grams, this = a 2 carb serving snack.

The amount of servings of carbs your aunt needs at each meal depends. Depends on her actual needs. This is determined by her weight, height and activity level. With more info I could figure that out.

The most important things for diabetics to do is develop a routine. Contrary to popular belief, they need to have 3 meals a day and a 1 carb serving snack in between. So a great snack would be something that counts as a 1-2 carb serving. Now that you know how to count carbs, you can help pick good snacks...medium sized apple, crackers, pretzels, graham crackers with PB...

Eating regularly and having snacks avoids the "roller coaster" blood sugars, the UP and DOWN....

Eskimoes are a totally different story...they live in sub zero weather and their bodies have adapted to NEEDING that type of diet/fat.

Don't worry too much about REAL chocolate candy!! It has enough fats in it to slow down the absorbtion rate, if she only has one piece every once in a while.

I like Nuts as a non sugar snackie and cheeses, and some apple.

Please don't be the diabetes police while trying to help your Aunt come to terms with this thing.

Go buy her a couple of books: Diabetes: The First Year and Atkins Diabetes Revolution. Both of you read them. They are available at all good book stores and on Ebay. They will explain all the ins and outs of this nasty disease and more on how to cope. I do think they would be excellent for any nurse or other caregiver to a diabetic patient too for gifting!!

I have a bit of Real chocolate candy about once a week! I also have half cup of ice cream (the real stuff) with chocolate fudge topping and the nuts about once a week!

Low fat has more sodium and sugars in it.
Sugar free has more sodium and fat in it.
Low carb has more fat and sodium in it.
Diabetes labeled foods are very expensive and do not taste good.

As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

Walmart, Target and most grocery stores carry sugar free candy on the same aisle as regular candy. There are even sugar free cookies made that are like Kit Kat bars or Oreos found on the same aisle as the regular cookies. My husband is diabetic as well. Walmart even has sugar free pecan pie. There is more sugar free stuff than you can imagine right on the shelf with the other stuff. It's just having a hightened awareness.
