My baby is 7 months old with asthma and I want to know if I should buy a cool mist humidifier to help him breath at night, cause he always wakes up coughing weather I do the nebulizer before bed or not. Will this help him? Also, what store can I get a small, cute, and inexpensive one for him? AND one more thing, If you have an experience with asthmatic children, can you give me ideas, clues, or any type of advice for me to help him or understand what is going on with him and stuff, cause I am not sure about it since I never experienced this with anyone or myself?

Thanks so much!

Humidity levels less than 20% and greater than 45% are unhealthy for people with asthma, so a humidifier can help if the indoor humidity is outside this range. However, portable humidifiers often breed large amounts of mold and bacteria which ends up blowing around the room. The cool mist humidifiers are the worst for spreading mold and bacteria, while steam vaporizers kill most of the mold an bacteria, but can burn children if they get too close. Evaporative humidifiers fall somewhere in between, but many of these have anti-microbial solutions that can be added to the water to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

I wouldn't go so far as to call him asthmatic. But my nephew had a lot of respiratory trouble as an infant, and the cold mist humidifier my mother put in his room helped a lot.

You might find a relatively inexpensive humidifier on E-bay, or you might even check your local Freecycle group- though the odds are long there.

You'll want to work closely with your baby's pediatrician. Keep the house very clean if you can, and above all don't panic: That will scare him which will worsen the situation.

He might outgrow the problem in time, but don't bet on it happening until it happens.

Good luck.
