Asthma has a new classification since about one year. Phase 1 is a light form, Phase 4 the worst. Now asthma is not a pleasure to live with, but it is not immediately life-dangerous, unless you have a status asthmaticus, this means a crisis of asthma you don't get out even with strong medication.
Now I don't suppose you are in phase 4.
In phase 3 and 4 oral cortisone is necessary to control the disease.
Phase 1 and 2 can be controlled with airway expanding medication, eventually associated together with a steroid in the inhaler
The last years a lot of new and very effective medications have been developped for asthma. So these days, with the right medication, it is possible to have a quite normal life, with the aid of those inhalers, and if necessarywith cortisone.
Astma crises can be very stressful, because you have problems to get air inside (very frightening). It is then advisable to try and stay calm, use the right medication, or call a doc immediatly. A status astmaticus can not be solved at home, and is a job for the lungspecialists in the hospital.

So don't panic yet, you're not dying. It is however advisable to regularly have a pulmonary checkup. This way the present pulmonary situation can be objectivated, and possible evolution to a worse phase can be prevented.
This just means: take care of yourself.

Absolutely. I can't think of anything more frightening than not being able to get enough air! I have a friend who has very severe asthma and every time he has an attack, it's very stressful for ME....I can't even imagine how scary it is for HIM.

Just because a lot of people have it doesn't mean it's no big deal.

Absolutely stressful but people still live with it. Again, isn't every disease a burden? Yes, but gasping for breath is one of the worst imaginable and something that cannot be comprehended by bystanders.....
