Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (which would explain why you tested positive for it). Genital herpes on the other hand are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 2. However, BOTH cold sore and genital herpes can be caused by either herpes simplex virus 1 or 2.
Genital herpes can be extremely painful, especially during the first outbreak. My first genital herpes outbreak was SUPER painful. I had several large open sores. I could hardly walk or sit down and I missed school and work for 3 days. I was prescribed a narcotic for the pain and 3 different antiviral medications (two different oral medications and one cream).
Some people's first outbreak are much milder compared to ones like mine, but for the most part they are usually very painful.
And, just because you have cold sores, doesn't mean you will ever get genital herpes. A LOT of people have cold sores. It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the WORLD has them. It's more common to have cold sores then to not have them!
Take care and good luck!

Both cold sores and genital herpes are herpes just on different spots of the body. If you have a cold sore which is Herpes type 1 (oral) and you are blowing a guy, or eating a girl (not sure which way you swing) then you are putting them at risk of catching herpes type 2 which is genital herpes. There was a doctor who while treating a patient went down on her and she contracted genital herpes because he had a cold sore on his mouth and she sued him because as a Dr. he should have known there was a risk of spreading the virus. This was in the newspaper, don't know the outcome. You're more likely to get oral herpes from performing oral sex on the infected persons sex organ then the other way around but it is possible. Play it safe.

I have hsv-1 genitally but not on my mouth.
If you have it orally has no bearing on whether you have genital herpes. Herpes sticks in the locaiton where you caught it - you can have hsv-1 orally but not genitally or genitally but not orally.
If the virus is caught genitally, the symptoms are the same as for cold sores, exactly the same, and vary in severity from person to person in the same way.
Sometimes I just get a tender itchy bump that goes in 24 hours, sometimes I get a small cluster of tiny blisters, maybe 1-4, that burst to leave a small sore. Actually, mine has never hurt, the most it has been is a bit tender.
Most of the pictures on the internet are of primary outbreaks, which is when you have just caught the virus and are the worst you will ever have, or of people who have herpes very badly - just as some people can get cold sores very badly.
As in happens, 8 out of 10 people have genital herpes so mildly that they do not know that they have it, so it doesn't alwasy hurt.
I caught genital herpes from receiving oral sex from my boyfriend, who has had cold sores since he was five years old.

Hsv 1 and Hsv2 are different strains of Herpes.
If you have a cold sore and give someone oral sex then they can contract hsv 1 in their genital area. Usually symptoms are milder than if they have hsv2.
Up to 60 percent of people with hsv2 don't even know they have it due to having little or no outbreaks/symptoms. Usually outbreaks occur within 2-20 days of exposure but sometimes can take years to occur. You can never be sure when you were exposed to hsv2.
Also a person with hsv2 'virally sheds' several times a year. That means they aren't having any symptoms but the shed the virus and you'll never know when that happens.
So you could be having sex with someone who has no symptoms and doesn't think they have herpes and you could get it even with condom use. It is very painful during an outbreak. Usually I develop a UTI during an outbreak and the outbreaks come on, for me, due to stress and lack of sleep.
I got my hsv2 from my husband who had no symptoms of it ever. Now I am stuck with it for life, while he never suffers from it at all.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/TreatmentsHerpes2o156nHs
Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?
But after a friend share this video everything has changed.
